The Grand Island Town Board issued a town proclamation Monday to Islander Matt Mondoux, who walked 359 miles from Grand Island to New York City in July during Walk 4 Lou to raise public awareness and funds, to combat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease.
"I have to tell you I looked every day at (his) website to see how he was doing" on the walk, said Town Supervisor Peter McMahon. "I know from reading the blog ... that there were some tough days."
Mondoux met New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on his arrival and received a Tiffany glass crystal apple. At right, Mondoux is flanked by his mother Susan Doyle and McMahon.
