Spring-cleaning takes many forms, and students at Niagara-Wheatfield Senior High School in Sanborn have formed a crew to spruce up the school's courtyards in readiness for end of the year activities.

The student government, along with students from the Twilight program, has been working after school for the last few weeks cleaning up the two courtyards on campus. Once filled with leaves, garbage, sticks and pallets of stones intended for landscaping walls, the small courtyard has been transformed by students.

"The students cleaned up all of the debris, built the landscape walls, laid down mulch, planted flowers and bulbs and put up birdhouses," said Counselor Lisa Lindamer. "For the first time in 15 years, the doors to the small courtyard have been unlocked and students and staff can now walk through the space throughout the day."

In another, larger courtyard, students planted flowers and bulbs and purchased Adirondack chairs for lounging during lunch periods.

Now, the courtyards are ready to host activities at the school, and recently, art students unveiled a student created sculpture in the small courtyard. On June 13, at 6 p.m., the annual Senior Awards Night will be held in the large courtyard.
