A benefit will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22, for Jennie Cyran, a young woman who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in January 2011. A 2007 graduate of Niagara University, she currently teaches special education in the Niagara Falls City School District and has coached children in several sports.

According to the National Library of Medicine, osteosarcoma is a cancerous bone tumor that develops during the rapid adolescence transition from teenager to adult. It is mostly found in the shin, leg, thigh or upper arm.

Cyran has had several surgeries to remove tumors and requires weekly radiation and bone treatments. The oncology bone treatments cost an average of $1,300 every two weeks. Medical insurances do not cover these procedures due to the fact that they are experimental.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will help pay for Jennie's medical expenses. Donations such as gift certificates, baskets, tickets or any other items that could be raffled off are appreciated. Monetary donations are also gratefully accepted. Checks can be made to Niagara University and mailed to: Monica Saltarelli, Campus Ministry, Lower Level Gallagher Center, Niagara University, NY 14109. The deadline for baskets is Aug. 13.

Cyran's benefit will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hyde Park Oasis Shelter. The event will include food and beverages provided by Niagara University as well as the raffling of baskets and items. Tickets are $20.

For more information, or to schedule a pick up for any donated items/baskets, call John Spanbauer at 716-799-9184, Saltarelli at 716-286-8409, or Derek Puff at 716-286-8055.
