Grand Island resident and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agent Christopher J. Dlugokinski "was recognized for his part in courageous rescue efforts undertaken on July 19, 2011, when a 5-year-old boy was killed after a Canadian driver fell asleep at the wheel of his tractor-trailer truck, and the rig flipped over, spilling its tree-length load of logs onto an occupied house.

For his actions, Dlugokinski received the Newton-Azrak Award, the highest honor bestowed upon members of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol for acts of bravery and heroism. The Newton-Azrak Award "serves as a reminder of the dangers and sacrifices demanded of the men and women who protect our nation's borders," the proclamation noted.

In issuing the proclamation, the Town Board congratulated Dlugokinski "on his bravery and exemplary efforts, thanks him for bringing positive attention to his hometown, and wishes him the best in all of his future endeavors."

The board also issued a proclamation to Jacqueline Sosnowski of Girl Scout Troop 10734 on the occasion of her receiving the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouts. Sosnowski, a Lifetime Scout, earned the Gold Award by completing more than 150 hours of community service and 50 hours of leadership for her "Giving Tree Club" project. The goal of the project was to develop an organization to assist all clubs within a school to raise funds for their needs using eBay-based marketing system.

Sosnowski acknowleded the encouragement and support she received from her Girl Scout leaders and role models, Joan Gasiorek and Sherry Moss.

In issuing the proclamation, the Town Board offered "its sincerest congratulations and best wishes" to Sosnowski for bringing positive attention to Grand Island.
