Lewis to continue to lead SPCA of Niagara

Amy Lewis, who became interim executive director of the SPCA of Niagara in February, has accepted a one-year contract from the agency's new board of directors to serve as executive director.

Lewis, formerly supervisor of admissions and rescue at the SPCA Serving Erie County, stepped in to replace former director John Faso, who was fired by the former board of Niagara County SPCA at the end of January after allegations of mismanagement and excessive euthanasia of animals sparked protests.

A press release from the newly formed board cited Lewis' work:

"Despite significant challenges, she has performed an outstanding job during her short tenure. Among her many significant accomplishments since her appointment as interim executive director almost 6 months ago, Ms. Lewis has raised the survival rate at the shelter from a disappointing 56 percent to an amazing 86 percent. She has significantly increased the number of foster families accepting animals for short-term care. Animal care and conditions at the shelter have been vastly improved.

"Ms. Lewis has also initiated planning and fundraising for short and long-term improvements to the shelter. The recent "Bow Meow" brunch fundraiser in Lockport, planned by Ms. Lewis and her staff of eager volunteers, was a great success with more events planned for the balance of the year. Our community is lucky to have such a hardworking and dedicated young woman to direct the care of our animals at the Niagara County SPCA shelter."

The following board members have been elected as the interim executive officers of board of directors of the SPCA of Niagara: president, Bob Richardson, JD; vice president, Dr. Pamela Bruns; treasurer - David Urban, CPA; secretary, Michelle Madigan, MBA CSP.
