A special exhibit about Germany and the collection of scrapbooks received from the Roland Camann estate will be highlighted at Das Haus Heritage Museum in Bergholz during special open hours for New York Heritage Weekend, May 19 and 20.

This is part of a statewide effort to link people with their history. Because there are more people in the U.S. with a German background than any other nationality, the members of the Historical Society of North German Settlements are preparing for many visitors on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Das Haus is located on the main street in Bergholz, at 2549 Niagara Road. It is a log building underneath the old wood sheathing and is one of the first dwellings put up by 800 German settlers when they came to Wheatfield in 1843 to find religious freedom. They and their descendants maintained many of their Old World customs until after World War II.

•The North Tonawanda History Museum at 54 Webster St., North Tonawanda, also is participating in New York Heritage Weekend, with this year's focus on North Tonawanda's own racing legend Jim Hurtubise, the Erie Canal, and the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo.

The History Museum will be open May 19, 20 and 21, with free admission all three days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At 1 p.m. each day, a video of the history of the Erie Canal will be offered, and at 2 p.m. a video of a trip of the canal will be presented. A Jim Hurtubise Classic Car Show is planned for Saturday, May 19, leading up to Monday, May 21, which will be proclaimed by the City of North Tonawanda as its first annual Jim Hurtubise Day.

Owners of appropriate classic cars should contact the History Museum to express interest in participating. Museum volunteer Richard L. "Joe" Zellner will coordinate plans for the weekend with museum staff. The show will be open to any pre-1980 vehicle.
