Lewiston Public Library May programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of May.

Clubs and More

•The Lewiston Book Club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, May 1, at 1:30 p.m. For further information, contact Anita Mallimo at 754-7714.

•The Dead Beats Society will meet on Friday, May 4, at 1 p.m. in the Local History Room. Call Michelle Kratts at the library, 754-4720, for details or email at [email protected].

Personal instructional genealogy appointments may be made on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until noon. Call the library to arrange an appointment or email Kratts at [email protected].

•Free Comic Book Day will take place Saturday, May 5, from 11 a.m. through 2:30 p.m.

Do you want to discover an original American art form that began in the 1930s? Are you interested in another form of award winning literature? Try a comic book or graphic novel. Each visitor will receive a free comic, courtesy of Diamond Comic Distributers and the Lewiston Public Library. Special comic book DVDs will be shown in the Community Room: "Yo Gabba Gabba" at 11 a.m. and "Captain America" at 12:50 p.m.

•The Parachute Group will meet on Tuesdays, May 8 and 22, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The meetings will provide a venue for networking, sharing contacts, ideas for best practices for the job search, and guest presenters on topics of interest to the group. The meeting is unaffiliated with any organization and is free and open to the public.

•Nickel City Reptile and Exotic Animals will visit on Tuesday, May 8, at 6 p.m.

•Make a Craft for Mom will be offered on Saturday, May 12, at 1 p.m. Visitors will be making something special for that special lady.

•The Lewiston Writers' Group will meet on Monday, May 14, and Tuesday, May 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lewiston Library.

•Computer classes this month include Open Access, Thursday, May 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and Mail Merge, Thursday, May 31, also from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is required for all computer classes. Call the library, 754-4720, for details.

•Moms Book Chat will meet on Thursday, May 24, at 7 p.m. Discussed will be "The Day the Falls Stood Still," by Cathy Marie Buchanon.

•The Knitting Club meets every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. No registration is required and knitters of all skill levels are welcome.

• The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library maintain a Used Book Room all year long; it's open during library hours. Items for sale include fiction, non-fiction, and children's materials.

May meetings for the month include the Lewiston Library board of trustees, Monday, May 7, at 5 p.m.; and Friends of the Library, Tuesday, May 8, at 6 p.m.

Special Event

•A special local premier of the motion picture, "The Yellow Wallpaper," will air Saturday, May 26, at 3 p.m. Directed by Logan Thomas and co-produced by former Niagara Falls resident Greg Beaton, the film is based on an "origins myth" rather than a direct adaptation of the famous Victorian gothic thriller by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Weekly Story Time

•Evening Story Hour, a time of songs, stories, and crafts, will take place on Tuesday, May 1, at 6 p.m. Featured will be "Mama is a Soft Warm Kiss." Visitors will make something special for mom.

•Alphabet Soup, a story time for ages 3 to 5 is offered Mondays, May 7, 14, and 21 at 10:30 a.m.

•Lewiston Lap Sit, a story time for infants age birth to 23 months is offered Wednesdays, May 2, 9, 16, and 23, at 9:30 a.m. Participants are asked to arrive at 9:25 a.m.

•Toddler Hour, a story time for ages 2 to 3 is offered Wednesdays, May 2, 9, 16, and 23, at 10:30 a.m.

•Story Hour with Mrs. Leardini, for all ages is offered. Thursdays, May 3, 10, 17, and 24, at 10:30 a.m.

The Lewiston Public Library will be closed Monday, May 28, for Memorial Day.

Library hours: Monday-Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
