Responsible for 18-month spree on Island, police say

Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard has announced the arrest of the person allegedly responsible for an 18-month long graffiti spree on Grand Island in which both public and private buildings and properties were defaced totaling between $20,000 and $30,000 in damage.

Detective Brian O'Hara along with deputies Brad Girdler and Jason Clark arrested 20-year-old Matthew Kasprzycki of Kirkwood Drive, Grand Island, and charged him with criminal mischief in the third degree, a class E felony, and making graffiti, a class A misdemeanor.

The suspect had a felony hearing on the charges March 14 in Grand Island Town Court.

On Feb. 29, Kasprzycki allegedly admitted to O'Hara that he was responsible for the bulk of the graffiti on the Island. He was taken into custody that evening and spent the night in the Holding Center until his $250 bail was posted the next day. Additional charges are pending.

Among the buildings or areas that Kasprzycki is accused of defacing include the Channel 29 building on Whitehaven Road, the pedestrian overpass over Beaver Island Parkway, and both the North and South Grand Island bridges. Kasprzycki's "tag" is the fictitious character Jaka.
