Citizens dinner a success

"The largest crowd ever" turned out last Wednesday evening, March 1, to honor Island citizens chosen by the local Chamber of Commerce for their outstanding contributions to community life.

Citizen of the Year Robert Campbell was greeted with a standing ovation, leaving no doubt in anyone's mind that the chamber's choice was one with which the townspeople heartily agreed.

Justice Richard O. Robinson, the evening's toastmaster, introduced the other recipients of awards: John Mesmer - Outstanding Senior Citizen; John James Kennedy - Outstanding Young Man of the Year; the Rev. Robert VanderMey, Bible Presbyterian Church - cited for his contributions in the field of religion, especially in the area of youth; Ruth Baker - awarded for her contributions to local education; F. Donald Hawley, Grand Island Town Justice - contribution to government; and Dr. Robert Miller, recognized for his contributions in the area of the Narcotics Guidance Council. ...

Thruway official 'shocked' at sidewalks

Erie County Legislator Charles M. Swanick met with James Martin, the executive director of the New York State Thruway Authority, in Albany Monday to discuss the condition of the Grand Island bridges and the Niagara section of the Thruway.

"Jim Martin was shocked at the condition of the walkways on the Grand Island bridges," Swanick said. "I had 25 black and white photos of the holes in the pavement. Mr. Martin's immediate reaction was that the walkways were a serious hazard and must be repaired immediately." ...

Marina-townhouse hearing draws huge crowd

There was standing-room-only in the Town Hall Monday night when the public hearing to obtain input on the proposed multimillion dollar Anchor Marina expansion began.

Scheduled for 8 p.m., the meeting drew 100 residents from various parts of the Island, but especially from the Ferry Village area where the development is planned. The action involved the expansion of the Anchor Marina, including construction of an island basin on waterfront property and a proposed 53-unit townhouse property for which rezoning would be required. The project is planned on waterfront property on the east side of East Ferry Road between Ferry Road and the Buffalo Launch Club.

Village residents expressed concerns about an alternate road in and out of the area, increased traffic (and) non-taxpayers living on their boats during the summer. ...

Final phase of new homes under way

Construction has recently begun on the final phase of townhomes at Fairway Greens, located just off of Whitehaven Road near East River.

There will be a total of 45 units on the premises, with 18 of them being located directly on the River Oaks Golf Course. They range from approximately 1,550 to 2,500 square feet. Included in the homes are a first floor master suite, central air conditioning, security, fireplaces and much more.

CT Enterprises, under the management of Peter Courney, is the developer; and Paul Lunick, owner and operator of Highview Homes, is the builder.
