Grand Island High School senior Kate Gilbert likes her chili medium hot, with some cheese, and Fritos Scoops corn chips.

She also enjoys helping in her community, too, as a member of Interact, the high school adjunct of the Rotary Club. Members of the clubs got together Wednesday to make dozens of quarts of chili in time for Super Bowl Sunday. Sale of the chili supports Interact's ongoing charitable endeavors.

"I just like volunteering and helping out," said Gilbert, the Interact secretary. She and the other Interact members will try their hands at soup when they cook for a local soup kitchen on Feb. 14 at the school.

"They love these hands-on projects," Rotarian Angelo Grande, a liaison to the Interact club, said of the students. "It's easy to get them to come out and do this."

Interact members who were on hand to make chili were Rachael Ruszkowski, Kate Gilbert, Alex Territo, Sara Carlson, Melissa Sainsbury, Sarah Chamberlain, Bri Gibney, Orendael Miller, Chris Komin, Alexis Cino, Katelyn Ruszkowski, Alyssa Cino, Andrew Gilbert and Taylor Marino. In addition to Grande, Rotarians Jerry Barlow, Ron Stanke, Dick Earne and Ang Palamuso stopped into the GIHS kitchen to lend a hand and supervise. There were many other Rotarians who helped package the finished product later.

Dennis Donovan, the head of food service for the Grand Island Central School District, and Jane Azbell, cook manager at Grand Island High School, graciously allowed the students and Rotarians into their kitchen.

The hungry can pick up their chili from 8 a.m. to noon at the high school, 1100 Ransom Road.
