First Western New York lawmaker to receive award in more than a decade

New York State Sen. Grisanti was named the winner of the 2012 William B. Hoyt Environmental Excellence Award for his work on behalf of conservation and the environment.

"Typically we present this award to members of the legislature who had a long tenure of fighting for change, but your early dedication to upholding the New York's state's environmental laws and your visionary approach to the state's most pressing conservation issues make you stand out as a most deserving 2012 Hoyt Award Recipient," said the Audubon Council of New York State in the award letter.

The Audubon Council is comprised of 27 affiliated Audubon chapters throughout New York state. Total membership exceeds 50,000 households.

"I am absolutely humbled by this award named in honor of William B. Hoyt for his contributions and work in the environmental community," Grisanti said. "I am also honored to ... share this award with a very impressive list of prestigious lawmakers like former governors' George Pataki and Eliot Spitzer, current Comptroller Tom DiNapoli and Sam Hoyt from Western New York."

Grisanti is in his second year as a lawmaker in Albany and currently chairs the Senate's Environmental Conservation Committee. He passed legislation in his committee to protect water resources, wildlife and habitat.

"To say you hit the ground running as the new Environmental Conservation Committee chair in the State Senate is an understatement. We were impressed by how quickly you became a steadfast supporter of the environmental protection fund, helping to maintain the fund in an otherwise challenging budget," said the Audubon Council.

The last recipient from Western New York to receive this award was former New York State Assemblyman Sam Hoyt in 2001. He is the son of the late William B. Hoyt, for whom the award is named.
