The 20th Century Club of Buffalo recently held the AIA Buffalo/ Western New York 2011 Design Awards Gala, celebrating the excellence of local builders and architects around the region. Cannon Design of Grand Island received three design awards - all of which were education projects.

The State University of New York, William R. Greiner Hall in Buffalo received the 2011 AIA Honor Award - the highest AIA award recognition for projects. A 600-bed, $58 million building, William R. Greiner Hall is the first residence hall built on the State University at Buffalo's campus in three decades. The building itself will also conserve the university's resources well into the future, with overall energy consumption 20 percent less than that of a typical building of the same size. It is currently in the process of becoming LEED Gold certified. The selection jury appreciated the "engagement and enhancement of the public realm, connection to the park and lake, while dealing effectively with the changes of loading and servicing."

Kean University New Jersey Centre for Science, Technology & Mathematics Education, in Union, N.J., received an AIA Merit Award for its "laudable sustainable initiatives and well executed detailing of the building envelope." The 10,000-square-foot science building includes teaching and research laboratories, computer facilities, training classrooms, conference center, auditorium, lecture halls and a restaurant. It is also registered to receive LEED Gold certification.

Lastly, Roosevelt Union Free School District Middle School, in Roosevelt, N.Y., received an AIA Merit Award as well. The new 162,000-square-foot middle school provides a learning environment for 800 students in a three-story building. The jury was particularly impressed with "the focused circulation in a clear central spine, which demonstrates a strong intent for layout and connectivity, going beyond the typical norm of a school interior."

Cannon Design presently employs a staff of more than 1,000, delivering services in 16 offices throughout North America, as well as in Shanghai, China, and Mumbai, India.
