Assemblyman John Ceretto today invited Gil Quiniones, who has been nominated as the new president and CEO of the New York Power Authority by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, to visit Niagara County. The two would discuss Niagara County's role in the NYPA system. Quiniones currently serves as NYPA's acting president and CEO.

"It is imperative that NYPA's leadership has a real-world understanding of the important role that Niagara County plays in our state's power production and how this energy can be used to lower electricity rates and create jobs," Ceretto said. "For too long, Niagara County has been overlooked by NYPA decision-makers. I hope Mr. Quiniones will be receptive to our communities needs."

Ceretto is hopeful that a visit to Niagara County by Quiniones will help to ensure that the new NYPA president is focused on Niagara County's needs, including representation on NYPA's board of trustees.

"Niagara County's lack of representation on the board hurts our region's ability to lower energy costs for residents and limits Niagara County's influence over the creation and utilization of its hydroelectric power," Ceretto said. "Not only do we need the head of NYPA to be focused on our unique energy needs, but we need local representation to ensure that the energy produced right here is used to promote local job growth, not transmitted to New York City and its metropolitan suburbs."

Earlier this year, Ceretto launched his "Empower Niagara" petition to gather countywide support for representation on the NYPA board. The petition is still active and will be delivered to Cuomo when Ceretto and State Sen. George Maziarz return to Albany for the 2012 legislative session.
