Put on your helmets and start your engines. NCCC is hosting a basic rider course designed to ensure the safety and security for beginning motorcyclists. The course is approximately five hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of riding exercises in a controlled, college setting.

"The course offers a complete instruction to the world of motorcycling," said Monica Lopoyda, director of continuing education at NCCC.

Cyclists will learn all the tricks of the trade about biking in two or three sessions. The course is not only educational, it will also give riders greater confidence, improved skills, insurance discounts and licensing-test waivers.

"Riders will gain a level of comfort," said Lopoyda. "They will learn the ins and outs of safety."

Students should contact their insurance agency to inquire about discounts on motorcycle premiums. New York will wave the road test portion of the motorcycle requirements for completed basic rider courses. To qualify for the road test wavier, drivers must be at least 16 years old, have a notarized parental approval if under 18, possess a class "D" (automobile), "DJ" (junior) or higher license and possess a current valid motorcycle permit.

More than one and a half million riders have graduated from the course. Students that join the program learn:

•To have fun by riding safely

•The basics on what to wear, how to start and stop a motorcycle and motorcycle controls

•Important street strategies to avoid trouble and stay safe

•How to maneuver a bike in difficult situations, such as swerving, avoiding collisions, special situations, lane changes, passing and avoiding hazards

The basic rider course costs $275. Classes run every weekend until the end of October and a few weekdays during the summer.

The program is affiliated with the state Safe Program and Motorcycle Safety Foundation. To ensure safety, students should wear a helmet, gloves, jeans, a jacket and boots.

NCCC is located at 3111 Saunders Settlement Road in Sanborn. Classes are held in parking lot No. 4.
