Niagara Hospice will hold its eighth annual butterfly release from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, in the Memorial Butterfly Gardens located at 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport.

In many cultures, butterflies are recognized as a symbol of hope and meaning, making them the perfect way to celebrate the lives of loved ones and provide an opportunity to remember them in a special way.

The event is open to the community and organizers invite families and individuals to release butterflies in memory or in honor of someone special to them.

In addition to the release, several activities for the whole family will take place, including a bounce house, childrens crafts and games, balloon art and music by ThymeLass. Light refreshments will also be available.

Special Events Coordinator Mandy Raff said more than 350 butterflies were released last year into the gardens.

"We look forward to this event every year because it brings families together, and it gives us an opportunity to celebrate with them as they remember people who were such an important part of their lives," said Raff.

To purchase butterflies and hand-painted butterfly sun catchers, call Niagara Hospice at 280-0766 or visit NiagaraHospice.org to order online or to print an order form. Each live butterfly and sun catcher can be purchased for $25 with proceeds benefiting Niagara Hospice. Live butterflies are pre-order only and orders must be placed by Monday, June 27.
