18-year-old is youngest Niagara County lawmaker ever

Niagara County lawmakers acted quickly to fill the vacant legislative seat formerly held by Niagara Town Councilman Danny W. Sklarski Tuesday, appointing Brittany Catchpole, D-Niagara, by a near-unanimous vote.

In the process, they also made history.

At 18, Catchpole is now the youngest citizen to ever serve as a county legislator in Niagara County, ending a record held for nearly four decades by Lee Simonson, who, after being elected at the age of 20, went on to serve for 32 years as a county lawmaker.

Catchpole is a senior at Niagara-Wheatfield High School who will be headed to Niagara University in the fall. She is as a former member of the legislative intern program.
