We live in an electronic age where kids are glued to the TV, their gaming systems, computer and their cell phone as they text away to their friends. Yet while they are engaged in these activities they are sedentary. Now more then ever, as obesity and type 2 diabetes is on the rise in our youth, children need to be encouraged to lead healthier and more active lives.

The YMCA's Growing Up Fit program is geared for children ages 7 to 15 years old and their families.  The program consists of a health assessment, eight weeks of education and exercise, a post assessment, and a graduation celebration.  The entire family is encouraged to participate as families and siblings alike learn that its fun to get fit. This program is paid for in full by BlueCross BlueShield of WNY and Univera, and in part by Independent Health.

At the Niagara Falls Family branch, the program is free thanks to a grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation. The program will run there from April 20 to June 25, Wednesdays 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. to noon at 1317 Portage Road, Niagara Falls. Call 285-8491. Call other branches for their schedules.
