Katie Couric provides life-saving information

On Monday, March 28, the Emmy Award-winning syndicated series "The Doctors" (check local listings) highlights the heartache of "medical" bullying, after learning about the plight of 12-year-old Brooke, who was teased at school because of to her medical condition. "The Doctors" introduces Brooke to Miss Delaware Kayla Martell, who is afflicted with the same autoimmune disease, and suggests methods to prevent kids from taunting on the basis of their appearance.

"Brooke and I both have alopecia areata. The way that I like to describe it, is it's kind of like we're allergic to our hair," Kayla tells Brooke's classmates. "We're very healthy and we can do everything and anything you can do. The only thing we can't do is use a curling iron on our heads. You asked if I was bullied in school. I was bullied once and it never happened again because I didn't let it bring me down."

And, "The Doctors" reveals colorectal cancer dangers with guest Katie Couric, who, as the spokeswoman for colon cancer awareness, delivers an impassioned plea about the importance of undergoing a colonoscopy.

"I think Jay (Monahan, her husband who died in 1998 from colon cancer) got so ripped off not seeing his daughters grow up and blossom into these fine young women, and, of course, they got ripped off, as I did, because we miss him every day," she says. "So you know, it doesn't have to happen. It doesn't have to be that way. I don't want people to be diagnosed with this disease in an advanced stage and say, 'If only ... if only I've gotten screened.' So keep that from happening. Get screened and, as I said, do it for yourself and do it for the people you love."
