Lewiston Council on the Arts has been approved for a grant of $10,000 to support artist residencies at Olde Sanborn Days, July 9 and 10, Rocco Landesman, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, has announced.

Only two organizations in Western New York were approved for this prestigious award.

"We are so pleased to be the recipients of this award. The funding will enable us to bring these truly outstanding and diverse artists to Olde Sanborn Days where the community will be able to interact with them and engage in their creative process," said Irene Rykaszewski executive director of LCA.

The Rotary Club of Niagara County-Central sponsors Olde Sanborn Days. Three artists have been chosen to conduct workshops and demonstrations throughout the weekend:

•Erwin Printup is a Cayuga/Tuscarora native, who resides on the Tuscarora Nation. His distinctive illustrations have appeared in many books.

•William Y. Cooper is a well-known Buffalo painter, print maker, muralist, playwright and art teacher, who will create a moveable mural.

•Brian Ruth, a "Master of the Chainsaw," has worked nationally and internationally and has spent 31 years as a professional performance carver.
