Lewiston Public Library March programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of March.

Special Programs

•Free income tax preparation is available for eligible Niagara County residents this tax season by AARP Tax-Aide representatives. Appointments are from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the library. Call the library, at 754-4720, to reserve a time slot.

•Brenda Kijowski, author, will present a book talk and sign copies of her work, "Seasons of the Soul," on Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m. Her book is a self-help resource and designed to aid individuals who have suffered the loss of a loved one. All are welcome.

•Operation Safe Child, with the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, will take place on Saturday, March 5, at 10 a.m. All are welcome.

•"A Celebration of Family History" will be presented Saturday, March 19, at 3 p.m. in the Community Room. Featured will be a film that includes several inspiring video presentations, as well as talks from significant leaders in the field of historical and family research, including award-winning author David McCullough and Henry B. Eyring, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. All are welcome.

Clubs and More

•The Lewiston Book Club will meet on Tuesday, March 1, at 1:30 p.m. For further information, contact Anita Mallimo at 754-7714.

•The Dead Beats Society will meet on Monday, March 7, at 6 p.m. Those interested in assisting with the digitization process of the library's obituary collection are welcome. The project is sponsored by the Jon F. Popkey Genealogy Room and is part of a continuing effort to allow easier access to family history records. •The Lewiston Writers' Group will meet on Monday, March 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the library. On Monday, March 28, from 5 to 8 p.m., the group will meet at Asker's Café, 400 Main St., in Youngstown.

The group consists of area residents who meet regularly to discuss and critique their writing efforts, and exchange ideas and information about the craft. Guest speakers are scheduled as available. For more information, visit www.lewistonwritersgroup.com.

•Mom's Book Chat, a book discussion group for moms, will meet Wednesday, March 23, at 7 p.m. Featured book is "Juliet" by Anne Fortier. Child care is provided for registered participants. The library will be closed to the public during this event.

•The Knitting Club meets every Friday, from 1 to 3 p.m. No registration is required; knitters of all skill levels are welcome. For more information, contact Ellen Comerford at 754-4144.

•The Coffin Club, a new club at the library, is currently looking for photographers. Those in high school or college, with a camera, access to a computer and an interest in spending time photographing Niagara-area cemeteries, are invited to meet and discuss the opportunity with Michelle. A session will be held in the library's Local History Room on Tuesday, March 8, at 6 p.m. For details, call Michelle at 754-4720, or e-mail [email protected].  

Recurring Events

•The library's Classic Film Series continues on Sunday, March 20, at 2 p.m., with a viewing of "The African Queen," starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. Free admission and snacks will be served.

•The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library maintain a used book room all year long. It's open during library hours. Items for sale include fiction, non-fiction, and children's materials.

•March meetings for the month include the Lewiston Library board of trustees, Monday, March 7, at 5 p.m.; Friends of the Library, Tuesday, March 8, at 6 p.m.; the Lake Ontario Ordnance Works Restoration Advisory Board, Tuesday, March 22, at 5 p.m.; and the Lewiston Garden Club, Tuesday, March 8, at 10:30 a.m.

Children's Events

•Tail Waggin Tutors continues at the Lewiston Public Library. For more information, contact Miss Ann at [email protected] or 754-4720. Sign-ups are under way for the following dates and times: Tuesday, March 1, 5:30 to 8 p.m.; Monday, March 7, 4 to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, March 8, 5:30 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 12, 1 to 3 p.m.; Monday, March 21, 4 to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, March 22, 5:30 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, March 26, 1 to 3 p.m.; Monday, March 28, 5:30 to 8 p.m.; and Tuesday, March 29, 6:30 p.m. Any child wishing to participate must sign a behavior contract with an adult, sign up for time slots and be ready to read to one of the four-legged friends.

•Annette Wall and the Lew-Port Middle School Builders Club will visit for Luck O' the Irish Story Hour on Saturday, March 12, at 11 a.m.

•Science Explorers Club meets on Tuesday, March 1, at 4:30 p.m. Miss Michelle from Lew-Port will explain photosynthesis.

•The Go Green Club will meet on Tuesday, March 15, at 4:30 p.m. Participants will construct their own greenhouse and are asked to bring a clean, 1/2 gallon, paper milk or juice carton and two pennies. The library will supply the dirt and seeds.

•The American Girl Club meets on Tuesday, March 22, at 4:30 p.m. Lewiston Police Officer John Penzotti will present a program, "What To Do About Bullies?" Girls and boys of all ages are welcome to join in, and parents also are encouraged to attend.

Weekly Story Time

•Alphabet Soup with Miss Ann, a story hour for children ages 3-5, will be held Mondays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28, at 10:30 a.m.

•Lapsit story time with Miss Ann, for children ages birth to 23 months, will be held Wednesdays, March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, at 9:30 a.m.

•Toddler hour with Miss Ann, for children ages 24 months to 3 years, will be held Wednesdays, March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 10:30 a.m.

•Story time with Mrs. Leardini, for children of all ages, is offered Thursdays, March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31, at 10:30 a.m.
