The Girl Scouts of Western New York is launching the 2010 Girl Scout Cookie sale season this week.

GSWNY has a membership of more than 20,000 girls and 9,000 volunteers across its nine-county jurisdiction, which includes Niagara County.

Girl Scouts will take cookie orders from Oct. 2-22, with deliveries made Nov. 5-10. Booth sales begin at WNY malls and community locations Nov. 11, and the cookie sale season closes Dec. 5.

As the primary "Gift of Caring" community service focus of the 2010 cookie sale season, the Girl Scouts are mounting an organization-wide effort to raise awareness of the problem of childhood hunger across Western New York. Called "Caring For Kids!", the all-counties effort is in partnership with the Food Bank of Western New York and Foodlink of Rochester.

In addition to enabling Girl Scout Cookie purchasers the opportunity to donate cookies as a dessert item to Food Bank and Foodlink, Girl Scout troops are being mobilized to collect canned foods via individual and troop food drives slated to take place throughout the early fall.
