Representatives of three branches of the United States military will be present, including color guards, as the Buffalo Stars Junior Hockey Club opens its 2010-11 season with its traditional "Salute to American Troops" weekend, Sept. 10-12.

On Saturday, Sept. 11, recruiters from the Army, Navy and Marines will host information stations in the main lobby of Holiday Twin Rinks, 3645 Broadway in Cheektowaga, at the invitation of the Stars organization. In addition, the Army will provide a color guard for a pre-game ceremony at 4 p.m., while the Marines will provide a similar color guard for a similar ceremony at approximately 7 p.m.

Recognizing that the opening ceremonies fall on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the Stars will include a remembrance of the victims as part of their pre-game ceremonies.

Saturday events taking place at Holiday Twin rinks include the following:

  • 2:15 p.m. -- exhibition game: Buffalo Stars Alumni vs. Lantrax WNY Media All-Stars
  • 3 to 8 p.m. -- Army, Navy and Marines host information stations in the rink lobby
  • 4 p.m. -- Continental Hockey Association Jr. B Hockey: Buffalo Stars vs. New England Huskies.
  • 7:30 p.m. -- Empire Junior Hockey League: Buffalo Stars vs. Frederick. Md., Freeze.

In addition, the Stars will be collecting gift cards to benefit the New York Air National Guard 107th Airlift Wing's Family Readiness Unit and hosting an in-house Chinese auction to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
