The Lewiston Dog Owners Group reports that work continues on the new Lewiston Dog Park now under construction on the Lewiston Plateau in the Village of Lewiston.

In the meantime, they announce the first orientation, intended to acquaint families and their pets to the soon-to-open dog park, will take place Thursday, Aug. 12, at the park site, located adjacent to the Portage Road entrance to Artpark. LDOG officials Molly Chamberlain and Andrew Bell inform there will be two sessions that evening - one from 6 to 7 p.m., the other from 7 to 8 p.m. - and each will be limited to 20 dogs and their owners.

"Please only bring one dog per family for the orientation. Also, since the park is still being put together, please bring a chair," says Chamberlain, adding that whatever is light and comfortable to carry will suffice.

Regarding the actual program, Bell, of Grandpaws Pet Emporium, says the purposes of this type of orientation are many. They include: creating a happy dog park experience for the pet owner and the dog; assistance adjustment techniques for dogs; and, for owners, the behavioral techniques of recall, settle and appropriate greetings they can practice with their pet in order to gain a positive experience while at the park.

"Dogs behave very differently on neutral ground in an off-leash area (i.e. a dog park) than they do on a leash or in your own yard, which they feel they have to protect," Bell notes. "Give your dog a chance to adjust in a controlled situation. He/she may need to learn to socialize in a new way. You can help him do this."

He adds that dog parents can learn to read some basic dog body language signs and how to react to make the most of your dog visits to the park.

For further information on the upcoming orientation, contact Chamberlain at 754-2550 or Bell at 754-0100.
