Lewiston Public Library August programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of August.

Special Events

  • Kristen and her therapy dog Destiny will visit the library on Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 1 p.m. Kristen will discuss what a therapy dog is and what it does, and what it takes to become a therapy dog and handler. Also discussed will be the library's "Tail Waggin' Tutors" program that will begin in September.
  • The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation will present a children's educational program on beavers on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 4 p.m. On display will be beaver skulls and pelts and visitors will be able to make a beaver craft.
  • Friday, Aug. 13, concludes the library's Children's Summer Reading Program. Participants are invited to visit at 4 p.m. that day for a beach party that includes snacks, games, crafts, digging for buried treasure, door prizes, and the raffle basket prize drawing. Registration is required; for further information call the library at 754-4720 or stop by.
  • Upstate New York Transplant Services will be at the library on Tuesday, Aug. 31, from 2 to 7 p.m. for a blood drive. Call to reserve a donation time slot; walk-ins are also welcome.

Clubs and More

  • The Lewiston Writers' Group meets Mondays, Aug. 2, 16, and 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the library. The group consists of area residents who meet regularly to discuss and critique their writing efforts, and to exchange ideas and information about the craft.   • The Lewiston Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 3, at 1:30 p.m. For more information, contact Anita Mallimo at 754-7714.
  • The Knitting Club meets every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. Open to all ages, no registration is required and knitters of all skill levels are welcome. For more information, contact Ellen Comerford at 754-4144
  • Mom's Book Chat will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. Discussed will be "Hiroshima Mon Amour" by Marguerite Duras. Child care is provided for registered participants. The library will be closed to the public during this event.
  • The Dead Beats Society will not meet in August but will return in September. Those interested in participating in the digitization process of the library's obituary collection, sponsored by the Jon F. Popkey Genealogy Room, can contact Michelle Kratts at 754-4720 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.
  • The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library maintains a used book room, open during library hours, all year long. Items for sale include fiction, non-fiction, and children's materials.
  • August meetings for the month include the Friends of the Library, Tuesday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m.; the Riverwalk Association, Monday, Aug. 23, at 5:15 p.m.; and the Lake Ontario Ordnance Works' Restoration Advisory Board, Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 5 p.m.

Children's Events

  • Miss Ann requests the help of Go Green Club and Science Explorer Club members to assist with the watering the trees planted at the library last spring. Watering will take place every Friday at 2 p.m. for the rest of the summer.
  • Lap reader programs for children ages' 0 to 4 years will be offered on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. The Aug. 2 program title is "Wet Pets Activity" and Aug. 9 is "At the Pond."
  • Independent reader programs are offered on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. Programs include: Aug. 3, "Stuck in the Mud" - children should wear old clothes to make a mud sculpture to take home; and Aug. 10, "Beavers" with the New York State Parks Department.
  • Story time with Mrs. Leardini is scheduled for Thursdays, Aug. 5 and 12, at 10:30 a.m. The program includes music, crafts and fun.

Library hours: Monday-Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, noon to -5 p.m. The library is closed on Saturdays.
