Lewiston Library May Programs, Events, Activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of May.

  • The Lewiston Book Club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, May 4, at 1:30 p.m. The book club meets the first Tuesday of the month. For further information, contact Anita Mallimo at 754-7714.


Family Programs
  • On Saturday, May 8, at 11 a.m., "You're the Best Mommy" story hour with Annette Wall and the Lew-Port Middle School Builders Club will be offered. Featured will be stories, crafts and snacks. Register at the library.

 

  • Family Movie Night is Tuesday, May 11, at 6 p.m. The last Family Movie Night of the school year, featured will be Disney's "The Princess and the Frog."

 

  • Saturday, May 15, at 1 p.m. will be the last Saturday Movie Matinee of the school year. Featured will be "Aliens in the Attic."


Visitors are invited to bring a blanket and the library will supply the popcorn and drinks for both shows. Viewers are also asked to let Miss Ann know of any PG movie choices they would like to see next year.

 

Clubs and More
  • The Lewiston Writers' Group meets on Mondays, May 3 and 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lewiston Library. Meeting time consists of members reading their work and receiving feedback from others. Time is also spent exchanging information helpful to writers, and sharing input on any writing difficulties. Guest speakers will be scheduled as available. Those who enjoy informative, creative and positive interaction with other writers are invited to visit. For more information, contact Debra Sherman at 754-8408.

 

  • The Dead Beats Society will meet on Monday, May 3, at 6 p.m. in the library's local history room. Those interested in assisting with the digitization process of the obituary collection are welcome to attend. This project is sponsored by the Jon F. Popkey Genealogy Room and is part of a continuing effort to allow easier access to family history records. Call Michelle at the library for details, or e-mail at [email protected].

 

  • Mom's Book Chat, a book discussion group for moms will meet Wednesday, May 19, at 6 p.m. Discussed will be "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold. Childcare is provided for registered participants. The library will be closed to the public during this event.

 

  • The Knitting Club meets every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. Open to all ages, no registration is required and knitters of all skill levels are welcome. For details, contact Ellen Comerford at 754-4144.

 

  • The Friends of the Lewiston Public Library maintain a Used Book Room all year long, open during library hours.

 

  • May meetings for the month include: Lewiston Library Board of Trustees, Monday, May 3, at 5 p.m.; American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary, Saturday, May 8 at 10 a.m.; Friends of the Library, Tuesday, May 11, at 6 p.m.; the Lake Ontario Ordnance Works Restoration Advisory Board, Tuesday, May 25, at 5 p.m. in the Local History Room; and the Riverwalk Association, Tuesday, May 25, at 5:15 p.m. in the Community Room.


Children's Events

 

  • The Science Explorers Club will meet Tuesday, May 4, at 4:30 p.m. For boys and girls ages 5 and up, featured will be "a time of practical recycling." Michelle Hinchcliffe and associates discuss recycling and participants will be making a special "Mother's Day Surprise" out of recyclables.


Space is limited; registration is necessary. This will be the last Science Explorer Club meeting of the year.

  • The Go Green Club will hold its Green Party Tuesday, May 18. For ages 8 and up, visitors are asked to bring snacks for an outside picnic. Be prepared with some ideas for next year's Go Green Club. Registration is necessary.

 

  • Tuesday, May 25, will be the last American Girl Doll Club meeting for the school year. Participants will be talking about Molly McGuire and writing letters and making cards for the injured members of the United States armed forces. Bring an envelope. Miss Ann will supply the stamps.

 

Weekly Story Time
  • Alphabet Soup Story Hour with Miss Ann meets Mondays, May 3, 10, 17 and 24, at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The story hour is for ages 2 through 5; call or stop by to register.

 

  • Toddler Hour with Miss Ann, a traditional story time for infants and toddlers 6 to 36 months old, meets Wednesdays, May 5, 12, 19 and 26, at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Call or stop by to register.

 

  • Story time with Mrs. Leardini, a traditional story time for toddlers and children 2 to 5 years of age, meets Thursdays, May 6, 13, 20 and 27, at 10:30 a.m. Call or stop by to register.

Library hours: Monday-Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In honor of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation, the Lewiston Public Library will be closed on Monday, May 31, for Memorial Day. The holiday, originally called Decoration Day, was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
