Counties call for federal aid to support reopening & avert dramatic cuts

The New York State Association of Counties on Wednesday released an updated report on the economic impact of the novel coronavirus on New York's counties. It projects potentially catastrophic drops in revenue between $1.5 billion to $3.6 billion over the next year.
SBA to make economic injury disaster loans available to agricultural businesses impacted by COVID-19

Earlier this week, U.S. Small Business Administration Administrator Jovita Carranza announced agricultural businesses are now eligible for SBA's economic injury disaster loan (EIDL) and EIDL advance programs. SBA's EIDL portal reopened as a result of funding authorized by Congress through the Paycheck Protection Program and Healthcare Enhancement Act. The legislation, signed into law by the president a week ago, provided additional funding for farmers and ranchers and certain other agricultural businesses affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

They were walking down Center Street, eating on picnic tables and sitting on benches, looking at monuments, licking ice cream in Academy Park, and sprawled out on Water Street, looking out on the river. Many of those people were not wearing a mask or cloth face covering.

Congressman Brian Higgins, D-NY-26, on Tuesday announced plans to introduce the U.S. Infectious Disease Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness Act. The bill would create an independent agency within the Department of Health and Human Services - the National Medical Command (NMC) - charged with preparing for, monitoring, and responding to pandemics. He said it would provide significantly increased federal funding for research into treatments and vaccines against infectious diseases.

National Grid is warning Western New York customers to beware of a new phone scam where imposters are demanding immediate bill payment and threatening service disconnection. This latest scam, which is targeting customers already facing hardships due to COVID-19, involves callers who pretend to be National Grid representatives. They tell customers that, unless payment is made within 30 minutes, their power will be shut off. The customer is then directed to call "the direct billing department to make a payment and avoid power disconnection."
