Jeannine Alsous earned a presidential scholarship, an academic competitiveness grant and other merit-based awards from her efforts as an honors student at Lewiston-Porter High School. To help pay her way through college, she lives at home with her single mother, works between 30 and 40 hours a week, and takes out approximately $5,000 in Stafford Loans.

The Judds and Loretta Lynn will join previously announced country superstars Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Jennifer Nettles, Reba and Carrie Underwood on "Girls' Night Out: Superstar Women of Country," country music's concert of the year. All honorees will perform and be honored at the taping on Monday, April 4, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, airing Friday, April 22 (9-11 p.m.), on the CBS Television Network.

Penn Dixie's Wednesday, March 16, illustrated program is on the "Geology and Scenery in and around the Colorado Rocky Mountains." It will be presented at 7 p.m. by Dr. Rick Batt of Buffalo State College, in the auditorium of the Gateway Executive Office, 3556 Lake Shore Road, Blasdell. Children, scouts, students, groups and the public are invited. No pre-registration is required. Penn Dixie members are free, while non-members are $4 each.

For each of the last four Valentine's Days, Dr. Stuart J. Weinstein has presented a check for several thousand dollars to the Family Support Center at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. Weinstein's philanthropic endeavor, known as "Operation Whiter Brighter," typically donates proceeds from his dental office's professional tooth-whitening procedures that take place during January to help local servicemen and women and their families.

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees is still struggling with whether or not to charge festival organizers a fee to cover safety and maintenance costs. At Monday's work session, Mayor Terry Collesano revealed the community's seven summer festivals cost the municipality almost $4,200 in Department of Public Works labor, and upwards of $11,000 in police services.

Level 9 and 10 gymnasts from Gleason's School of Gymnastics traveled to Orlando, Fla., last month to compete in the Presidential Classic. The meet was held Feb. 19 and 20 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and was hosted by Twisters Gymnastics from Boca Raton, Fla. More than 1,700 gymnasts of various levels competed from all over the country.
