HS Hoops: Battle of the Border games come down to wire

For the third year in a row, the Battle of the Border brought talent from north of the border in Ontario to Niagara Falls High School to face off against some of the best that Western New York has to offer. Although only three Canadian teams played in this year's classic, the players from Canada represented their side of the border well, winning two of the three games. There were also some familiar faces from last year's battle who returned to the Wolvarena for another bought with an American high school. Here is a full recap from the action on Saturday.

Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning hit "This Is Me," from the global chart-topping "The Greatest Showman-Original Motion Picture Soundtrack," will be used by NBC Olympics leading up to and during the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games, NBC Olympics and Atlantic Records announced. "This Is Me," performed by breakout star Keala Settle, was co-produced and written by award-winning duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

The Buffalo Sabres Alumni Association will host the 14th annual Sabres Alumni Wine Festival from 6-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at KeyBank Center. The event, co-sponsored by KeyBank, Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and John W. Danforth, will feature wineries and restaurants from Buffalo, Niagara-on-the-Lake and beyond.

Lewiston-Porter alums bring new art, new ideas to new atrium

"With the renovation, the capital improvement project that happened with the school, the art rooms, the whole fine arts wing got significant renovations, and this beautiful atrium was added on," said art teacher Brett Coppins, Class of 1992. "Once that happened, it got us to thinking about how can we bring it to the next level. We really wanted to rename this section of the school the 'Center for the Arts.' "

Last fall, members of the New York State Assembly minority conference hosted a series of regional forums, including an event in Niagara Falls, to provide an outlet for victims of domestic abuse, their advocates and law enforcement to discuss ways to prevent in-home violence and effectively support those who have suffered from its traumatic impact. As a result of the forums, the task force on preventing domestic violence released its report, "A Safe Haven: Helping Abuse Victims and Enhancing Protections."

Lake Ontario maximum outflows continue, as water levels remain high

The International Joint Commission announced this week that while several months of maximizing outflows has dropped Lake Ontario at an unprecedented rate and to well below the record peak set at the end of May 2017, water levels remain relatively high for this time of year following a cold and wet start to winter. As a result, IJC said that outflows will continue to be maximized in response while making intermittent and temporary reductions to manage challenging ice conditions in several areas of the St. Lawrence River.
