AMPAS: Academy determines new Oscars category merits further study

While remaining committed to celebrating a wide spectrum of movies, the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences announced Thursday it will not present the new Oscars category at the upcoming 91st awards in 2019. The Academy recognized that implementing any new award nine months into the year creates challenges for films that have already been released. The board of governors continues to be actively engaged in discussions, and will examine and seek additional input regarding this category.
Ortt awards 5 Niagara County libraries new education funds

On Wednesday, New York State Sen. Rob Ortt awarded $35,000 in state education funding to five local Niagara County libraries. Representatives from the Niagara Falls Public Library, the Lewiston Public Library, the Ransomville Free Library and the Youngstown Free Library joined the hosts, Sanborn-Pekin Free Library.
DEC: $2M in grants for local food rescue organizations & municipalities to increase food donation, food scraps recycling

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced $2 million in grant funding for food pantries and other emergency food relief organizations of wholesome food to New Yorkers in need and to municipalities as part of a comprehensive effort to reduce food waste and increase food waste recycling.

Gerrard P. Bushell, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), announced work has completed on a $16 million project to renovate Bishop Hall at SUNY Buffalo State College. This project is part of roughly $59 million in capital renovation projects DASNY is completing on SUNY campuses statewide.
Cuomo: New York to invest $127.7M Volkswagen settlement in clean vehicles

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced New York will utilize the $127.7 million received from the 2016 Volkswagen settlement to dramatically increase the number of electric vehicles and other clean vehicles in the state. Covered vehicles include new buses, trucks, locomotives, ferries, tugboats and cargo-handling equipment, as well as the availability of electric vehicle charging equipment statewide.

Director of fine arts Dean Vallas said the Board of Education and superintendent have made new strides to foster fine arts in the district. The most noticeable being the construction of a full-time Fine Arts Center at North Tonawanda High School.

Village of Lewiston recovering from storm

A thunderstorm invaded the Village of Lewiston late Monday afternoon, dropping trees, limbs and branches. A South Fifth Street transformer was injured, which temporarily left some residents without power. That portion of roadway was closed for the first half of Tuesday, as village Department of Public Works crews cleaned up the site and restored the power generator.
