Julia Nowak, an artist from Amherst, said she loves transforming old compact discs, DVDs and vinyl records into clocks of various sizes, each with a different abstract pattern. She creates her clocks with a technique called fluid art. Fluid art is an abstract painting technique that involves the use of fluid art mediums, such as acrylic paints.

As most visitors realize, the Niagara County Peach Festival is much more than just peaches. It's a celebration of community. From the various competitions to the cheerleader displays, the many on-site vendors at Academy Park, the Center Street parade to on-stage entertainment, the Peach Festival certainly provides the venue to showcase the area's best.

As part of the National Federation of Just Communities national conference in Buffalo this week, members on Wednesday took a daytrip to Lewiston. Their tour bus stopped at the Freedom Crossing Monument on Water Street, and they were greeted by Sally and Josiah Tryon (aka Eva Nicklas and Tim Henderson). The two Lewiston legends recounted tales of first coming to the village, efforts to lead people to freedom, and the story behind Susan Geissler's famed bronze statue.

Francis Center, a ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis at Stella Niagara, will hold a mega meat raffle at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13. Doors open at 5 p.m. at Town of Niagara Active Hose, 6010 Lockport Road, Niagara Falls. Tickets are $15 per person, or $100 for a table of eight.

U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today that Joseph Wedge, 43, of Lewiston, who was convicted of attempted possession with intent to distribute of methamphetamine, was sentenced to serve 36 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.

Until 11:59 p.m. local time on Sept. 30, 2023, veterans who deployed to a combat zone, never enrolled in VA health care, and left active duty between Sept. 11, 2001, and Oct. 1, 2013, are eligible to enroll directly in VA health care. This special enrollment period gives veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other combat zones an opportunity to enroll directly in VA health care without first applying for VA benefits.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a public hearing on the Kensington Expressway project will take place Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Buffalo. The public hearing, to be hosted jointly by the New York State Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration, will provide residents and interested parties with an opportunity to publicly express their views concerning the environmental, economic and social effects of the current design plans associated with the project.

Shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday night, Niagara Falls Police Department patrol responded to 9101 Niagara Falls Blvd., for a man stabbed. A 30-year-old Niagara Falls man suffered multiple stab wounds and reported he was stabbed while at the rear of the address. He was transported to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, then transferred to ECMC where he is in stable condition.

Hunting season is almost here, and the Firearms Permit Review Board (FPRB) of Wheatfield will be giving its annual muzzleloader course at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Community Center located behind the Wheatfield Town Hall. A certificate will be issued to those taking this course, as a requirement for a muzzleloader discharge permit.

As students return to school this week, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced New York state is making COVID-19 rapid test kits and masks available to school districts and boards of cooperative educational services by request. This comes amid reports of the new BA.2.86 variant and following a rise in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations this summer.
