Grand Island Historical Society officers Carolyn Doebert, Sharon Nichols and Maggie Gushue presented a framed copy of the original 1864 deed of the fifth-oldest house on Grand Island to current owners Robin and Bryce Shipman at their recent festive sesquicentennial birthday celebration.

The following incidents occurred from Aug. 4 to 10, as reported by the Grand Island Fire Co. A total of 37 calls were answered by the department during this period. The GIFC has now responded to 913 calls so far this year. Last year at this date, the GIFC had responded to 871 calls.

Assemblyman John Ceretto is advocating for the construction of a new convention center in downtown Niagara Falls. As ranking minority member of the Assembly Tourism Committee, Ceretto sees this convention center as crucial to bringing construction jobs to the region, and enhancing Niagara Falls' long-term status as a tourism hub in New York.
"Since becoming an assemblyman in 2010, continuing Niagara Falls' legacy as a tourist hotspot in our state has been a top priority of mine," Ceretto said. "Currently, our downtown lacks the type of major draw that would bring tourists and tourism dollars into the city during the cold-weather months. Building a convention center and multi-use arena in Niagara Falls would fill that void."

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced the recipients of $340 million in full-day pre-kindergarten funding for 81 school districts and community-based organizations statewide, opening full-day classroom slots to nearly 37,000 children.
The funding, included in the 2014-15 state budget, is the first installment as part of the state's commitment to invest $1.5 billion over five years to build a statewide universal full-day pre-kindergarten program.
Assemblyman John Ceretto announced the Niagara Falls City School District is receiving a $289,131 grant to fund pre-kindergarten. This grant comes in addition to the millions in pre-k funding Ceretto helped secure during budget negotiations this year.

State Sen. Mark Grisanti introduced legislation today (S.7935) that would expand the boundaries of the Power Proceeds Allocation Act funding program to include all of Erie County. This expansion would allow eligible businesses and not-for-profits in all of Erie County to apply for power at a reduced cost.

Patrons driving to Artpark Tuesday for the Styx concert may have noticed more cars parked off South Fourth Street. Vehicles were on residential lawns - parked both parallel and perpendicular - on the road and in driveways. Some homes had more than a half-dozen parked on site.
If this appeared in contrast to previous Village of Lewiston Board rulings, it was - and it wasn't.

Empire State Development highlighted the economic benefits resulting from the post-production animation of "Dora and Friends: Into the City" in New York. The new children's television series spent approximately $1 million in the state on post-production costs, hired 80 New Yorkers, and generated more than $5 million in non-post-production spending for local New York vendors.
The series is the Empire State's first fully animated television show since Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo extended and enhanced the film and television tax credit in 2013 to facilitate post-production work for animation.
