At the Monday evening meeting of the Grand Island Board of Education, trustees reviewed the $51,859,079 proposed budget for the 2011-12 school year. The budget, with its estimated tax increase of 1.7 percent, will go to public vote on Tuesday, May 17.

The property had been slated for demolition by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

After almost one year of evidence and one year following closing submissions on an appeal filed by the residents in the Village of Queenston challenging a Niagara Escarpment Commission decision that granted a development permit to construct a two-story building on the private dock in Queenston, the minister of natural resources has rendered a decision. The minister found the NEC's decision to grant the development permit was incorrect.

Andrew Cuomo to discuss the appointment of a Niagara County resident to the New York Power Authority's board of trustees in order to fill one of its vacancies. The meeting was scheduled after Ceretto personally reached out to Cuomo earlier this year to express his concerns about the board's exclusion of local representatives.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced this week that the Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act is now law. As of April 1 New York holds the distinction of having the most comprehensive electronic waste, or "e-waste," product stewardship program in the country. The law also establishes a statewide e-waste recycling goal and requires manufacturers to recycle their share of the statewide goal based on market share.
