Niagara County Legislator Rich Andres, chairman of the Economic Development Committee, on Monday announced applications are now available for Niagara County's COVID Relief for Small Business Grant program. Niagara County was awarded $1 million in state Community Development Block Grant CARES Act funding for the program, which will be administered by the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency.

Christmas Walk weekend wrapped Sunday night with the inaugural Lewiston Christmas Lights Parade. The one-hour event featured floats and decorated first-responder vehicles, as well as dancers, costumed characters, musical performances and local nonprofits. Families lined the roadway to watch, cheer, take pictures and collect candy.

Gov. Kathy Hochul today announced the detection of three more confirmed cases of the COVID-19 omicron variant in New York, for a total of eight confirmed cases. Her team said, "So far, the cases appear unrelated and have been confirmed through sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. All three of the new cases are from New York City, for a total of seven New York City residents, and one from Suffolk County, confirmed to have the omicron variant."

Empire State Development on Friday announced the beginning of stabilization work on the roof and foundation of the Michigan Street Baptist Church. The Buffalo Niagara Freedom Station Coalition project, a not-for-profit organization that owns the church, is one of the recipients of a portion of ESD's $65 million East Side Corridor Economic Development Fund, and will allow for increased tourism and visitation to Buffalo's historic Michigan Street African American Corridor.

During the 2021 spring semester, senior Maren Geiger began her endeavors of bringing awareness to sexual health and wellness on Niagara University's campus. After gathering information and having many conversations, Geiger's Sexual Wellness Initiative (SWI) was formed. It is a coalition (not affiliated with Niagara University) of almost 40 students who are dedicated to educating students about sexual wellness.
