This Wednesday, 740 kids from Niagara and Erie counties came out to enjoy a spectacular picnic filled with food, fun, and games. The Grand Island Lions Club Special Kids Picnic, an annual event dedicated to offering safe, supervised activities to developmentally disabled and physically handicapped children, has become a Grand Island tradition.

Savory Sips and Village Wine Tours, a new business on Center Street, and owner Rebecca Christie is eager to begin doing her part to serve the Buffalo region. After Christie came up with the idea to hold a tribute concert to help fund Roswell Park Cancer Institute research, she began contacting musicians to play at the event and businesses to support the endeavor.
The sponsors and musicians Christie contacted for the event, "Inspiration," were equally enthusiastic. Christie says, "When I came up with this idea, I found that Roswell was thrilled to be a part of this event, and the band (playing the concert, Beatle Magic), donated a lot of money to sponsor this project. I was also able to make up the rest of the difference with enthusiastic sponsors."

At 3:38 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, Grand Island Fire Co. rescue personnel responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident on Baseline Road near the intersection of Bedell Road.
Fire Chief Kevin Koch states that although this head-on collision caused considerable front end damage to a pickup truck and passenger van, the occupants claimed no injuries, during evaluation by GIFC medics. Islander Mary Westlake-Douds, age 36, and her 1-year-old son, who was safely secured in a child car seat, both escaped injury. The other driver, 34-year-old Jacob Kolb of Buffalo, also claimed no injuries.

Assemblyman John Ceretto, R-I-Lewiston, will give public testimony on Aug. 16 at the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library in opposition to the Thruway Authority's plan to raise tolls by 45 percent on commercial trucks. The toll hike was approved by the public authority's board last month.

Celebrating upstate New York's unique history and scenic beauty, 500 bicycle riders from 36 states joined with state and local officials at Quackenbush Square in Albany Sunday to mark the completion of Parks & Trails New York's annual week-long bicycle tour from Buffalo to Albany.
The Albany celebration recognized the riders' achievement and highlighted the importance of the Erie Canalway Trail to upstate New York's quality of life and economy. When the Canalway Trail is finished, it will be the longest statewide trail in the U.S. It is 75 percent complete along its 524-mile total length.
