Nearly 1 million packages of Girl Scout cookies have landed in Western New York for the "mega drop" event. From March 3-6, Girl Scout volunteers will fill their vehicles with cookies to prepare their troops' orders. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on Tuesday announced a new cooperative agreement with the state comptroller's office; Niagara County; Orleans County; the cities of Lockport, Niagara Falls and North Tonawanda; and the Niagara Orleans Regional Land Improvement Corp. (NORLIC) to promote the redevelopment of dozens of potentially contaminated properties in Niagara and Orleans counties.

Catholic Health to acquire land in Lockport for new hospital campus

Catholic Health has contracted to purchase 104 acres of land in Lockport, which will be the site of the new Lockport Memorial Campus of Mount St. Mary's Hospital. The multiple parcels, located off South Transit Road between Shimer and Ruhlmann roads, are currently under environmental and zoning review. Access to the hospital campus will be off Shimer Road near Transit.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced the expansion of Pine Pharmaceuticals LLC's manufacturing plant in the Town of Tonawanda. The drug outsourcing company - which moved to the 25,000-square-foot building at 355 Riverwalk Parkway in the Riverview Solar Technology Park in May of 2018 - will be tripling the size of the facility.

When a state judge opened the door to indoor dining for Erie County eating establishments last Thursday, Jan. 14, patrons beat feet into Grand Island restaurants. The patter of their feet was music to the ears of restaurant owners, who were more than ready to comply with the required COVID-safe measures of 50% capacity, 6-foot distance between tables, no more than four people per table and 10 p.m. closing.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced a proposal to boost partial unemployment insurance benefits to New Yorkers who return to work part-time, as part of his 2021 State of the State. The plan would ensure unemployed New Yorkers who accept part-time work are not penalized by basing their partial unemployment benefits on the hours they actually work, rather than the number of days they work in a given week.

DiNapoli is urging New Yorkers to read the fine print for details about fees and expiration dates. Even as some sellers of gift cards have eliminated inactivity fees, consumers should still ask whether fees apply. DiNapoli reminds New Yorkers to spend the gift cards in a timely fashion. If not, the money could eventually get turned over to his office of unclaimed funds.

Catholic Health hospitals receive area's highest grades for patient safety

Catholic Health's hospitals lead the region in The Leapfrog Group's fall 2020 Hospital Safety Grade Report, including the only two "A" safety grades in Western New York. Kenmore Mercy and Mount St. Mary's hospitals earned two of only 14 "A" grades that were given in all of New York. Sisters of Charity Hospital's Main St. and St. Joseph Campuses, as well as Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, each received the region's only "B" safety grades.
