The building - which also includes a basement gymnasium and a second-floor suite of offices and fitness studios - closed to the public at 8 a.m. Monday. It is still being tested as of this publication. Results are due sometime around Oct. 13.

Unexpected and persistent sickness symptoms prompted workers in the Village of Lewiston clerk's office to initiate mold testing on Sept. 16. Results came back positive on Thursday.

After walking hundreds of miles, Ken Johnston, left, is welcomed by Lewiston's Tim Henderson, portraying underground stationmaster Josiah Tryon, at the Freedom Crossing Monument on Thursday. Johnston began his "Walk to Freedom" on July 14 in New York City, tracing the footsteps of freedom seekers such as Harriet Tubman, while visiting known Underground Railroad communities along the way.

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston on Tuesday voted unanimously to amend local law 3-2022 and lower the municipal speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph. They sought to take advantage of legislation signed last month by Gov. Kathy Hochul (A.1007-A/S.2021-A) permitting municipalities to implement such a change.

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston will vote Tuesday, Sept. 6, on lowering the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph. If adopted, the change in law would be effective throughout the municipality - and not just on Center Street.

Nearly 100 reenactors and a nationally known historian will gather at Old Fort Niagara on Labor Day weekend to bring the War of 1812 to life. Richard V. Barbuto, who is both a retired Army lieutenant colonel and a Ph.D., will discuss the Battle of New Orleans at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3.

Modern Disposal Services recently teamed up Lt. James Lucas, Sheriff Michael Filicetti and the Niagara County underwater recovery team to support a new underwater metal detector unit for their division. The new device has advanced technology to make it easier for the underwater team to locate a variety of articles when needed in certain situations and difficult conditions.

Lewiston Town Board members had a relatively light session Monday. The meeting was marked by recognition of the bicentennial committee for a job well done at the recent commemoration, as well as a positive town audit received for 2021-22.

No members of the public were in attendance Tuesday when a hearing was held regarding a request made by the Frontier House owners for a payment in lieu of taxes from the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency. NCIDA Assistant Director Andrea Klyczek closed the meeting just two minutes after making her introductory remarks.

Lewiston's bicentennial weekend drew rave reviews from residents for its combination of special events - including a parade, a performance by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and an extended display of fireworks on the Fourth of July - as well as a series of articles on historical sites that ran in this publication in the months leading up to the special occasion.

The Village of Lewiston celebrated its new inclusive playground Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Marilyn Toohey Park behind the Red Brick Municipal Building. Since the site opened earlier this summer, it has been a popular location for families with small children. The splash pad has been particularly busy.

The Lewiston Garden Club celebrated its annual GardenFest this past weekend with beautiful weather, large crowds, and the finest in greenery. This year's theme was "Helping Lewiston bloom for 95 years," and the event featured speakers, open gardens, vendors and special displays along Center Street.

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston on Monday voted to fence-in the new inclusive playground and resurface the outdoor basketball courts at Marilyn Toohey Park. They approved these improvements contingent on receipt of funds from the sale of the "Big Yellow House" at 475 Ridge St.

Earlier this week, New York State Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt was able to recognize and honor his nominee for the 2022 New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame, Col. Bruce R. Sutherland. The family of Sutherland, who was honored posthumously, received the award from Ortt's office at the first Col. Bruce R. Sutherland Memorial Golf Tournament held at Niagara Frontier Golf Club - a local favorite of Sutherland's.

Volunteers with the Historical Association of Lewiston hosted a drive-thru Chiavetta's chicken barbecue fundraiser on Saturday at the Town of Lewiston Town Hall parking lot. They were joined by elected and local business leaders. Dinners were just about sold-out when these photos were taken.
