North Tonawanda cuts ribbon to band shell

On Saturday afternoon, the City of North Tonawanda avoided the rain and cut the ribbon to its new band shell at Raymond Klimek Veterans Park, 700 River Road.

On Monday night, the Town of Wheatfield Town Board held its last regular board meeting for the month of May, but before the meeting took place, the board heard from Budget Director Edward Mongold on the 2019 estimated budget.

A class of 1998 Niagara-Wheatfield High School graduate and Niagara Falls, New York, native is serving as part of the Pre-Commissioning Unit for the future Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116). Chief Petty Officer David Vendetti is a fire controlman assigned to DDG 116 in Bath, Maine. As a fire controlman, Vendetti is responsible for training and the professional development of junior sailors.
Wheatfield CSD budget passes

On Tuesday, residents of the Niagara-Wheatfield Central School District voted on the $72,179,915 budget for 2018-19. The vote was approved with 547 "yes" votes to 212 "no" votes.

The North Tonawanda Department of Youth, Recreation and Parks in conjunction with the mayor's office, Niagara County Legislature, Niagara River Greenway Committee, and Community Development Office, announced Monday there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new bandshell at Raymond Klimek Veterans Park. This unveiling will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the park, 700 River Road, North Tonawanda.

Carnegie Art Center and Gateway Harbor present 1st Music & Arts Festival of the Tonawandas

The Carnegie Art Center and Gateway Harbor will host the first Music and Arts Festival of the Tonawandas in Tonawanda and North Tonawanda from July 31 through Aug. 4. The event will feature a variety of music, art, food, art activities for families and more on both sides of the Gateway Harbor, in addition to local businesses, galleries and museums in both cities.

Pappas has announced the Arbor Day Foundation has once again named the City of North Tonawanda "2017 Tree City USA" in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters.
Town of Niagara Planning Board tables discussion on Bri Estates

On Tuesday evening at the Town of Niagara Town Hall, the Town Planning Board held its monthly meeting. Discussion on the revised Bri Estates site plan was expected, but the board had to table all discussion after developers from Double C Realty felt the need to make changes to their plan and submit an updated proposal. Planning Board members agreed they didn't know what changes would be made to the proposal.
Drake Elementary student honored for volunteerism

NCCC Alumni Association to host 5K run/walk

The Niagara County Community College Alumni Association will host its 20th annual 5K run/walk on Friday, May 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The course is USA Track and Field certified and features a fast, flat route around the scenic NCCC campus in Sanborn. The Health Association of Niagara County Inc. has a 90-year history of caring for and supporting residents of the Niagara County community. This Saturday, from 2-4 p.m. at the Wheatfield Community Center, 2790 Church Road, HANCI will celebrate a book launch and release for its "Faces of Niagara." The publication, being released to the community for the first time on Saturday, celebrates the lives of almost 70 Niagara County residents aged 90 and older.
NCCC announces keynote speakers for 54th annual commencement ceremonies

Niagara County Community College Interim President William J. Murabito announced Tuesday that Stephen Eden, New York State Sen. Robert Ortt and JoAnn Pellegrino will deliver the keynote addresses at the college's 54th annual commencement ceremonies. As a change from the past few years, there will be three ceremonies taking place on the Sanborn campus at 9 and 11:30 a.m., and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in the Arts and Media Theatre.

Niagara Catholic celebrates 90 years

Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour has announced the new addition to the sheriff's office canine team has been named in honor of Chief Craig C. Harmon, who was the chief of the Niagara County Drug Task Force when he passed away in 2004. The new canine, Chief, is currently in training with handler Deputy Richard Bull. He was purchased through many generous donations and funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Tuesday afternoon, the Niagara County Host Community Standing Committee, which administers and oversees projects funded by Niagara River Greenway funding, held a brief meeting to hear several proposals. Two of the proposals came from Town of Niagara Supervisor Lee Wallace, who is also a vice chairperson to the group.

On Sunday afternoon, the Town of Wheatfield held a luncheon at the town's Community Center to swear in David Heim as the new town justice. The town also recognized Matthew Mosher who was sworn in last Tuesday and replaced Heim as the town prosecutor.
