Academy Park bleachers demo'd

The green bleachers were torn down on Tuesday and Wednesday. Lewiston Event Center co-owner Harold Hibbard donated manpower to have the seating area demolished.
Brickyard Brewing Co., Pub & BBQ involved in late-night Center Street blaze

A staple of Center Street in the Village of Lewiston endured a tough hit late Tuesday night. Brickyard Brewing Co., in addition to the Pub and BBQ, erupted in flames that resulted in a partial roof collapse.
VFW Post 313 presents Memorial Day remembrance by car

Over 20 families participated in the VFW Post 313 Youngstown Memorial Day car drive-by remembrance Monday at Universal, Saint Bernard's, Oakland Rural and Old Fort Niagara cemeteries. At each site, veterans got out of their vehicles and offered a salute to their fallen comrades and a wreath was placed at the War of 1812 monument at Old Fort Niagara.
Village of Wilson water line update

Attention Village of Wilson residents: The Department of Public Works will be flushing water lines for a few days, beginning Tuesday morning. This may cause low water pressure and possibly brownish water. The village government advises residents to avoid washing any whites and said, "Thank you for your patience during this regular maintenance."

Kiwanis Club donates to Lewiston DPW

The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston donated more than a dozen food packs to the village's Department of Public Works on Friday. Each kit included a can of soup or ravioli, a reusable bowl, oatmeal, pudding, water and, of course, peaches - all courtesy of Kiwanian Dean Beltrano. In addition, Kiwanian Jan Mathews dropped off a tray of cookies.

Lewiston Council on the Arts regretfully announces the cancelation of this year's summer events due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Bug Fest," the "Summer of '69," the "Blue Monday" concert series and the Lewiston Art Festival and KeyBank Chalk Walk Competition will return in 2021.

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees on Monday voted unanimously to restrict traffic on Ridge Street. The roadway is now a one-way street, with motorists entering via the Fourth Street corner and exiting onto Fifth Street.

Tuscarora Nation Picnic canceled

The 175th annual Tuscarora Nation Picnic, which was scheduled for July 10-11, has been canceled for this year. The summer picnic highlights Native American culture and traditions and includes dance, music and native foods.

Though hospital visitation remains suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mount St. Mary's Hospital has implemented a program to comfort patients and their friends and families. "Gifts of Cheer" is the new initiative, created by the Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation following a request from the friend of a patient in the hospital.
Lewiston Senior Center food drive

Though the Lewiston Senior Center remains closed under Gov. Andrew Cuomo's "New York State on PAUSE," Director Carol Jacobs said, "We wanted to help the community. We are having a one-day food drive on Saturday, May 30, to benefit the Ransomville Food Pantry. It will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. here at the center in the parking lot" (4361 Lower River Road).

In the Loop with the Lewiston-Porter Board of Education: Election date set, budget a work in progress

The Board of Education election and budget vote will take place on Tuesday, June 9. It will be conducted entirely by mail-in ballot. Per guidance from New York state, we will first send out a postcard outlining specifics of the budget, election and voter qualification to each household. Official ballots will be mailed the third week of May to each of the 20,000 registered voters in the district.

Dozens of people were out and about in the Village of Lewiston enjoying the summer-like weather. They were walking down Center Street, eating on picnic tables and sitting on benches, looking at monuments, licking ice cream in Academy Park, and sprawled out on Water Street, looking out on the river. Many of those people were not wearing a mask or cloth face covering.

The Village of Lewiston Board of Trustees unanimously approved the fiscal year 2020-21 budget on Monday. Residents will see an 8-cent increase in their property taxes, with a fee of $7.65 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. That equates to $12 more for a homeowner with a $150,000 property.

Closure of all schools will continue now through Wednesday, April 29. The governor states this will again be reassessed in two weeks. There has been no discussion or guidance as to the closing of school for the remainder of the year. As hope springs eternal, we are still operating on the premise that schools will reopen at some certain point this year. We continue to look forward to returning to school and returning to normalcy.

Arrest made after suspicious vehicle seen in Lewiston

At 11:07 a.m. Saturday, Niagara County Sheriff's Office patrol units were dispatched to the area of 5355 Walmore Road. They investigated a confirmed report of a female driver retrieving a long gun from the bushes and handing it to a male passenger of a black, four-door sedan. Further information indicated the female re-entered the vehicle and traveled southbound toward Saunders Settlement Road.
