GardenFest 2022: Helping Lewiston bloom for 95 years!

With sunny skies and rising temperatures, the weather has been perfect for getting outside and tackling work in our own gardens. The same can be said for Lewiston Garden Club, which is ramping up our own beautification projects and marking a big milestone - 95 years of helping Lewiston bloom!

LCA bringing 'Summer of '69' to bicentennial weekend

The Lewiston Council on the Arts welcomes its 1960's rock musician friends back to the village this summer - as part of bicentennial weekend festivities. The 17th annual "Summer of '69" kicks off Thursday, June 30, with a 6 p.m. preparty and fundraiser at the Lewiston Stone House, 755 Center St. It's a $10 donation per person at the door.
Structure fire in Porter

On May 30 at 7:38 p.m., the Niagara County Sheriff's Office Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a residential structure fire on Main Street in the Town of Porter. A responding fire chief arrived on scene and confirmed a working structure fire, with flames through the windows and roof of the building.
Memorial Day: Veterans worthy of reflection, celebration

Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487 held its annual Memorial Day celebration and ceremony Monday at the "Circle of Honor" monument in Academy Park in Lewiston. Cmdr. Gordon Spencer served as master of ceremonies. Veteran and New York State Sen. Robert Ortt delivered the keynote address. Boy Scout Troop 824 conducted a flag-folding ceremony, and Santino Hall led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The mansion on 105 Third St. belonged to one of the earliest settlers of Lewiston, who built the home sometime around 1815. This man is Joshua Fairbanks. He was born Jan. 14, 1768, in Dedham, Massachusetts, and moved to Lewiston in 1805 after creating a successful tavern in Queenston, Canada. It is known that Aaron Burr and his daughter and son-in-law stayed at his tavern on their way to see Niagara Falls around 1805.

Lewiston Town Board approves solar facility for Sanborn Farm Museum

Following a leadoff public hearing that drew favorable comments, the Lewiston Town Board moved to approve the site plan design/special use permit documents for a solar facility proposed by Borrego Solar Systems on the grounds of the Sanborn Farm Museum at 2660 Saunders Settlement Road.

On Saturday, May 28, members of the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces volunteer committee will return to Riverdale Cemetery to honor 47 unclaimed World War I veterans this Memorial Day by planting flowers at their gravesites and cleaning up the surrounding area.

'The King's Birthday' special event at Old Fort Niagara

A British soldier, serving at Fort Niagara during the 18th century, got one holiday a year: the King's Birthday. To celebrate, the fort's garrison was turned out in new uniforms and powdered hair. At noon, the artillery fired a "Royal Salute," followed by three volleys of musketry.

At 7:24 p.m. Wednesday, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications center received a 911 call reporting a residential structure fire on Glengrove Drive in the Town of Porter. Niagara County Sheriff's Office deputies responded and confirmed a fully involved attached garage fire, with the fire extending into the residence.
