Coronavirus: Cuomo declares state of emergency to contain spread of virus

During a briefing on the novel coronavirus, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo today declared a state of emergency to help New York more quickly and effectively contain the spread of the virus. The governor also confirmed several new cases.

Jazz icon Chick Corea and his new Spanish Heart Band, the flamenco-charged eight-man band of Latin rhythm masters, will be joined by special guest vocalist Rubén Blades at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, for a special concert event in the Artpark Amphitheater. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, March 6.

Catholic Charities: Volunteers from Niagara County help support Appeal 2020

About 55 parish volunteers, clergy and Catholic Charities' staff attended a volunteer training workshop Saturday to help kick off Appeal 2020 for Catholic Charities in Niagara County. The event was held at Immaculate Conception Church in Ransomville in preparation for the annual campaign, which carries a goal of $10 million.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the state's world-class fishing opportunities continue to draw anglers from near and far to New York's many productive freshwater sportfisheries. New data on angler effort, patterns, preferences and attitudes was released as part of DEC's statewide survey of freshwater anglers, which helps DEC assess both the biological and human dimension aspects of managing New York's freshwater fisheries.

Cuomo announces 'make-ready' program for electric vehicles

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced the New York State Department of Public Service issued a report recommending the establishment of a statewide utility-supported "make-ready" program to promote responsible electric vehicle charging station deployment. In addition, the governor announced more than 20,000 rebates have been approved for New Yorkers to purchase electric cars under the Drive Clean Rebate initiative, which provides residents with a rebate of up to $2,000 for the purchase or lease of a new electric car from participating dealers.

The concept was simple. Find a rock, decorate it, then hide it again. Soon, someone else will find it and take a picture, then hide it, too. A fun game in cities across the U.S. hit WNY in 2017 when Kimberly LaRussa, a local blogger of a website called Sweet Buffalo, was introduced to it by a friend in Florida. She said it seemed like a fun activity for the long winter, but couldn't have imagined what it would become.

Cuomo: $300 million plan to reimagine Erie Canal

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday unveiled the 29th proposal of his 2020 State of the State: a $300 million plan to reimagine the Erie Canal by creating recreational activities on the Canal to boost tourism, mitigating flooding, enhancing irrigation and recreational fishing and restoring wetlands. Cuomo is recommending the New York Power Authority board, which now oversees the Canal Corp. as a subsidiary, approve the $300 million investment over the next five years at the board's January meeting.
Memorial welcomes first baby of 2020

Niagara County's first-born baby of 2020 made her debut at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Michaela Rose Lucatra arrived at 2:52 a.m. on New Year's Day. Nineteen inches long and weighing 6 pounds, 15 ounces, she is the daughter of Lindsey and Michael Lucatra of Grand Island.
Niagara County DA Wojtaszek speaks out on new bail law
