Congressman Brian Higgins announced over $500,000 for Federally Qualified Health Centers in Western New York. Three grants, provided through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for $167,000 each, are being awarded to Jericho Road, the Northwest Buffalo Community Health Care Center and the Community Health Center of Buffalo.

Family Promise of Western New York, an emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness, has been awarded $100,000 from the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance's Homeless Housing and Assistance Program. The award completes a $200,000 capital campaign the organization has been fundraising over the past year for critical upgrades to its emergency shelter for families.

Over the past five years, nearly 3,500 people have been killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the "100 Deadliest Days," the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when the number of crash fatalities involving a teen driver historically rise. We have seen multiple deadly crashes in New York state this summer.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday signed legislation (S.6579A/A.8420) further decriminalizing marijuana use in New York. His camp said the state's existing marijuana laws "disproportionately affect African American and Latino communities, and this legislation will address those racial and ethnic disparities by reducing the penalty for unlawful possession of marijuana to a violation punishable by a fine, and by creating a process for individuals who have been convicted for possessing small amounts of marijuana to have their records expunged."

The New York State Department of Transportation will host a public information meeting from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the Porter Town Hall, located at 3265 Creek Road, Youngstown. The informal, open house meeting will cover a proposed project to replace three bridges located on NY Route 93, Youngstown-Lockport Road, and NY Route 425, Cambria-Wilson Road, over Twelvemile Creek and branches of Twelvemile Creek, in the towns of Porter and Wilson.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday signed legislation (S.5532B/A.1303) banning the performance of declawing procedures on cats, making New York the first state to prohibit the practice. The bill took effect immediately.

In the U.S., vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks are occurring in schools, churches, religious groups and other group settings with low immunization rates. New York state has experienced increased numbers of measles outbreaks in areas with low immunization rates of children. This was due to religious exemptions that resulted in unvaccinated children attending schools where disease was spread to other unvaccinated children, some of whom cannot receive vaccines due to medical conditions.

Empire State Development on Wednesday announced "A Quiet Place Part II," the sequel to the original hit thriller directed by John Krasinski, has started production in Western New York. The film, which is produced by Paramount Pictures, is expected to hire over 400 people in the area and invest more than $10 million into the regional economy.
