U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson recently announced the allocation of the remaining $1.988 billion in CARES Act funding for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The allocation focuses funds toward places with households facing higher risk of eviction. To date, HUD has provided nearly $5 billion in CDBG funding nationwide to help communities combat the coronavirus and alleviate economic hardship.

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA), in partnership with BellAge Inc., and the Association on Aging in New York (AgingNY) has announced the launch of "CV19 CheckUp" in New York, a free, anonymous, personalized online tool that evaluates an individual's risks associated with COVID-19 based on their life situation and individual behavior, and provides recommendations and resources to reduce those risks.

Local government sales tax revenue declined by 7.8% in August compared to the same period last year, according to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. August's sales tax collections totaled $1.3 billion for counties and cities, or $111 million less than in August 2019.

Independence Express, the transportation branch of Western New York Independent Living Inc. will provide free van rides to people with disabilities living in Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming counties who need a ride to vote on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 3). Or, if one would prefer to cast a vote prior to Election Day, one can get a ride to a designated early voting site in their county during its limited hours of operation between Oct. 24 and Nov. 1.

A special youth-only pheasant hunting weekend will be held in Western New York on Oct. 10-11, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced. The hunt will occur one week prior to the regular pheasant hunting season and enables junior hunters (ages 12-15 years old) to hunt pheasants with a licensed adult companion. The 2020-21 regular pheasant season opens Oct. 17.

It's fall, and influenza (flu) season is here again. The flu is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. The virus spreads mainly from person to person through droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. The virus also may spread when people touch something with flu virus on it and then touch their eyes, nose or mouth. Flu can cause severe illness, hospitalization and death. Anyone can get the flu, and serious problems can occur at any age.

However, the town was cautioned to monitor its finances closely as harsh reductions in sales tax revenue and state aid funding are looming.

The New York State Department of Labor on Thursday announced New York has paid nearly $1.9 billion in lost wages assistance (LWA) benefits to 2.26 million New Yorkers this week, representing retroactive payments of $300 for the weeks ending Aug. 2, 9 and 16. In total, New York state has now paid $44.5 billion in benefits to New Yorkers during the COVID-19 pandemic - representing more than 21 typical years' worth of benefits paid in just six months.

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) urges caregivers and older New Yorkers, particularly those with chronic health conditions and/or a weakened or impaired immune system, to learn to recognize the early warning signs of sepsis, to get immediate treatment, and to learn how to prevent infections that could lead to sepsis. Sepsis is a very serious illness for people of all ages, but it can be particularly devastating, even deadly, for older adults - even more so now because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

After frequent and growing pleas from the Empire State Association of Assisted Living (ESAAL), its member assisted living communities, their residents and family members, on Sept. 9 the New York State Department of Health offered more flexible rules for allowing resumption of resident-family visits, removing a significant obstacle referred to as the 28-day rule. ESAAL is grateful to the department for the change, which allows more assisted living communities to be eligible to resume family visitation with residents.
