DMV to expand online services

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is expanding online services, making it easier for New Yorkers to do business with the DMV from the comfort of their homes, and allowing the DMV to serve more customers in person who cannot complete their transactions online.

The New York State Department of Labor on Thursday announced New York has paid nearly $1.9 billion in lost wages assistance (LWA) benefits to 2.26 million New Yorkers this week, representing retroactive payments of $300 for the weeks ending Aug. 2, 9 and 16. In total, New York state has now paid $44.5 billion in benefits to New Yorkers during the COVID-19 pandemic - representing more than 21 typical years' worth of benefits paid in just six months.

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) urges caregivers and older New Yorkers, particularly those with chronic health conditions and/or a weakened or impaired immune system, to learn to recognize the early warning signs of sepsis, to get immediate treatment, and to learn how to prevent infections that could lead to sepsis. Sepsis is a very serious illness for people of all ages, but it can be particularly devastating, even deadly, for older adults - even more so now because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Moving Day" is a walk to beat Parkinson's disease hosted annually by the Parkinson's Foundation. It is the largest fundraising event of the year for the foundation. The ninth annual "Moving Day Buffalo" is scheduled for noon Saturday, Sept. 26. This year, however, the "walk" will be a virtual one.

After frequent and growing pleas from the Empire State Association of Assisted Living (ESAAL), its member assisted living communities, their residents and family members, on Sept. 9 the New York State Department of Health offered more flexible rules for allowing resumption of resident-family visits, removing a significant obstacle referred to as the 28-day rule. ESAAL is grateful to the department for the change, which allows more assisted living communities to be eligible to resume family visitation with residents.

Catholic Health and its foundations notified of nationwide data breach

In mid-July, Catholic Health and its foundations were notified by a third-party software vendor, Blackbaud Inc., of a cyber security breach that impacted the health system and other nonprofit organizations locally and throughout the country. The breach, which was part of a potential donor data base, included the names, medical record numbers, and dates of service for patients who received care in Catholic Health from 2016 through May of this year.
