Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz has issued a travel advisory, in effect until further notice, for the City of Buffalo and all of northern Erie County due to a winter storm that could leave snow accumulations of up to 2 feet in some areas by Thursday morning. The entire region will see lake-effect snow, blowing and drifting snow, and extreme cold temperatures and wind chills over the next 36 hours and into Thursday. The travel advisory urges against any unnecessary travel during this period, and using extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced nearly $4.5 million was awarded to 13 animal shelters and humane societies across the state through the New York State Companion Animal Capital Fund. The funding will support construction, renovation and expansion projects that will enhance animal care and health, and help ensure adoptions for New York's dogs and cats.

Local sales tax collections continued to climb in 2018, growing for the third year in a row, according to a report released by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Collections across the state of $17.5 billion grew by $872 million, or 5.3 percent.

New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs made public today a letter he sent to Gov. Andrew Cuomo formally requesting the governor make full restoration of Aid and Incentives to Municipalities Funding as part of the executive's 30-day budget amendments. The senator was joined by local elected officials from across the 60th Senate District who supported his call for the restoration.

Community Missions will hold its 22nd annual Sweetheart Dinner, presented by KeyBank, on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Sheraton Niagara Falls. AAA of Western and Central New York wants to make sure drivers are prepared to battle the cold this winter. Hazardous storms and inclement weather are a factor in more than half a million crashes and more than 2,000 road deaths every winter, according to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. AAA urges drivers to slow down, be cautious and prepare their vehicles for cold days for their own personal safety.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz on Monday signed an amendment to Local Law 2 (2014), the county social host law, which has now been strengthened to include the known abuse of drugs on a property as a violation of the law, along with known underage drinking. The amended law targets individuals who are 21 years of age or older and knowingly allow the consumption of alcohol or drugs by a minor in their home or other privately owned property.
