OASAS: More than $5.1 million in funding for addiction recovery centers across New York

The New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) announced the award of more than $5.1 million in funding to establish 14 new recovery community centers across New York, and expand services at two existing recovery centers. Funding for the centers was awarded through a competitive request for applications process, administered by OASAS and its fiscal partner, the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene.

It was announced Thursday The board of directors and Jazz Festival staff will hold a fundraiser, "A Taste of Jazz," from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, March 31, at the Brickyard Brewing Co., 436 Center St. The event will help offset some of the costs of producing the free, two-day outdoor music festival.

Arts Services Initiative of Western New York received a $10,000 grant, while Squeaky Wheel received $15,000, Burchfield-Penney Art Center received $30,000, and the Center for Exploratory and Perceptual Arts received $10,000.

Chief Frank Previte officiated a swearing-in ceremony for new officers Mitchell Pegan, Adriano Medici and Lt. Michael Milbrand, who recently retired from the Tonawanda Police Department. Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday toured the ice boom and ice-breaking operations on the Niagara River following the significant windstorm that impacted Western New York from Sunday into Monday. The tour was conducted on the New York Power Authority's William H. Latham ice breaker, which is used to prevent ice jams on the river and also to prevent ice from blocking the tunnel water intakes that are used by NYPA's power plant for power generation.

National Grid restores power to 98 percent of customers impacted by windstorm

National Grid's Western New York field force of more than 1,500 workers has successfully restored power to 98 percent of the nearly 88,000 customers impacted by the damaging windstorm that pummeled the region on Sunday and Monday. The remaining 1,500 customers without service in the hardest hit neighborhoods of Buffalo, Niagara Falls and surrounding areas are expected to have power restored hour-by-hour as crews continue to work around the clock. The company's extensive resources will remain in the region until the last outage is repaired.

2018 Erie County sales tax receipts show growth over 2017

The Erie County Department of Budget and Management on Tuesday announced final sales tax receipts for 2018 were 4.25 percent greater than 2017, the largest one-year increase since 2011, despite slowing growth in the fourth quarter of the year. Erie County realized additional sales tax revenue of $12.565 million over budget in 2018, while the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority share of sales tax was $559,000 over budget, leaving Erie County with net revenue of $12.006 million.
