Organization to take different approach to community outreach in 2019

United Way of Greater Niagara (UWGN) has announced its 2018 campaign results, as well as plans for its 2019 campaign. The campaign recently wrapped up its fundraising efforts for 2018, achieving a little over 96 percent of its target goal. The $1 million-plus raised will allow the organization to continue substantially supporting its dozens of member agencies throughout Niagara County.

“Everybody did a fantastic job this past year raising funds and we want to thank all our campaign committee and volunteer chairs from the bottom of our hearts,” said Jim Briggs, co-chairman of the 2018 campaign. “While it’s not the exact goal we had hoped to achieve, we’re experiencing tougher economic times as a community and it’s become increasingly challenging for United Ways across the entire state to reach campaign goals. The bottom line is that enough money was raised to stabilize the agencies that depend on it for income. Of course I’d always like to see us do better, but that’s not always possible depending on the year.”

“The 2018 campaign had very strong support in the community, thanks to the help of countless individuals, companies and organizations working together,” said William Tiger, 2018 co-chairman. “Now, as the organization has grown to include North Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda, we believe we have an even greater foundation for continued success. Everyone has a reason for why they give and where they give. We want to make sure people realize when they give to UWGN that the impact is real, it is local, and the money is used extremely efficiently.”

Looking ahead into the 2019 campaign, set to kick off in September, UWGN plans to take a slightly different approach to community outreach this year.

Plans for the upcoming campaign are already underway, as the organization just announced its 2019 chairmen will be Michael Sigurdson and Marcus Latham.

“As we move forward with this year’s campaign, we plan to partner closely with board members and volunteers on developing a strategy that will allow us to expand our reach throughout the greater Niagara region,” Sigurdson said. “Our hope is to continue putting meaningful initiatives in place that will help us build a strong foundation for years to come.”

“One of the main goals of 2019 will be to educate more people about the work of United Way and explain our direct impact on the program providers and how they affect the community,” Latham said. “It’s important that people understand that all the money raised is used here locally and serves the needs of others right here in our own backyard.”
