Following New York state's announcement last week updating protocols for large-scale outdoor event venues, the Toronto Blue Jays and Buffalo Bisons are working with local officials, including the state's Department of Health, to safely increase capacity by introducing fully vaccinated seating sections at Sahlen Field, in line with the latest guidelines.

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance on Monday reminded taxpayers who have yet to file their tax returns that the deadline to do so is Monday, May 17. To date, the department has processed more than 9 million returns and issued 4.7 million refunds. Eligible taxpayers who still need to prepare and submit their returns can do so for free at www.tax.ny.gov.

Cardinal O'Hara High School in the Town of Tonawanda decided to show its appreciation of its teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week with thank you sign put up at the entry to the school on Monday. The tribute was put up to show teachers how much they mean to the students and to honor all the hard work they accomplished in the pandemic.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced the reopening of the Historic Palace Theatre on Saturday, May 1, following a $3.5 million renovation that received $600,000 through Lockport's Downtown Revitalization Initiative award. Work on the nearly century-old structure included installing new seating, floors and a larger orchestra pit, as well as other interior improvements aimed at ensuring the future vibrancy of this community cornerstone.

Empire State Development and Preservation Buffalo Niagara announced $500,000 has been awarded as part of the first round of grants being made through the East Side Commercial Building Stabilization Fund, part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's East Side Corridor Economic Development Fund. Nine awardees have been selected to receive funding for the stabilization of historic at-risk buildings on Buffalo's East Side.

The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center (NFUGRR) and the AT&T Foundation have launched "Black History Now," a program to provide online educational resources on Black history, social justice and the legacy of slavery. NFUGRR has provided virtual tours and resources for teachers and students to utilize amidst the pandemic, but the organization aims to keep these lessons in the classroom beyond Black History Month as a way to continue the important conversation.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced the start of construction for Heritage Point on the South Aud Block at Canalside in Buffalo. The project includes two approximately 103,000-square-feet mixed-use buildings separated by an open walkway that follows a portion of the historic Prime Slip.
