DEC enforces the annual brush burning ban to prevent wildfires and protect communities during heightened conditions for wildfires each spring.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday announced "substantial rehabilitation work" has begun at Buffalo's former Public School 78 to transform the vacant building into 46 affordable apartments and space for community programs and services. The $19 million Olympic Avenue Apartments will be energy-efficient and will offer residents free Wi-Fi and technical support as part of the state's efforts to close the digital divide.

Tops Friendly Markets raised $13,365 as a result of its gingerbread house campaign for Oishei Children's Hospital. The campaign, which kicked off in early November, welcomed families to purchase a gingerbread house kit at locations throughout the region, with a portion of the proceeds being donated back to the hospital. The kits came complete with gingerbread to build a house, plus sweet candy decorations and icing.

The New York State Division of Consumer Protection on Friday issued a consumer alert about the dangers of carbon monoxide and fire hazards in extreme cold weather. The winter months pose the most risk for these hazards - as the temperatures drop, consumers may turn to dangerous heating alternatives to stay warm. Propane heaters, generators, space heaters and/or outdoor grills all pose lethal risks of carbon monoxide poisoning and fire hazards when used improperly.
