Niagara-Wheatfield softball halted in sectional final

On Tuesday evening, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons strolled into Williamsville East High School with one thing on their mind: winning a Class AA Section VI title. Unfortunately, the Falcons were halted by No. 5 Lancaster, as the Legends defeated N-W, 7-5.

Brothers - they fight together, cry together, live together and have each other's backs. For Zack, Tyler and Evan Belter, they do all of that and keep each other on the correct path while playing hockey and lacrosse for the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons.
Niagara-Wheatfield softball rallies into sectional finals

It's been about seven years since Niagara-Wheatfield softball coach Jim Proefrock could say his team was heading to the big game. Proefrock breathed a sigh of relief Thursday night, as the Falcons defeated the Williamsville North Spartans, 8-4, in the Section VI Class AA semifinals.

On Friday evening, the Niagara Falls Wolverines and Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons sent their ace pitchers out to the mound for a big Niagara Frontier League game at the Niagara Falls turf facility. With two aces on the mound, majority of the crowd thought it would be a pitchers duel. That was not the case, Friday. The Falcons used 21 hits to defeat the Wolverines, 22-11, in a game where the score was not indicative of the gameplay throughout.

Coach Jim Proefrock calls his Niagara-Wheatfield softball team a "bunch of gamers." Versus Grand Island, the gamers fought back. After blowing a 4-0 lead, the Falcons rallied back to defeat the Vikings, 11-6.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons softball team has had a knack for producing a quality team out of the Niagara Frontier League. With five Section VI titles and eight Niagara Frontier League crowns under their belt dating back to 1976 and 1982, respectively, the 2018 Falcons could use their experienced roster to ring in No. 6 and No. 9.

Mackenzie Quider has a huge role for the Niagara-Wheatfield softball team. Not only does she pitch in the circle for the Falcons, she hits fourth in a strong lineup. On Tuesday evening, she showed exactly what she's capable of. The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons defeated the Grand Island Vikings in Niagara Frontier League play, 3-2. The game was the first home game of the year for the Falcons due to dreary April weather.
Bottom of lineup leads Falcons to league win over Ken-East

Tuesday evening provided some not-so-great conditions to play baseball. Nevertheless, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons were on the new turf facility at Kenmore West as the home team versus Kenmore East. In a game that provided 21 walks, double-digit errors, 22 runs and only 11 hits combined by both teams, the Falcons walked away soaked as the victors, 15-7.
Locals showcase talent at PAL/ACE all-star games

On Saturday afternoon, local high school basketball talent stormed into Niagara Falls High School for the annual PAL/ACE all-star games. The day of basketball included a freshman/sophomore game, as well as a junior/senior game. Each team, for both games, included a mix of the classes. Attendees who showed paid $5 for a ticket and all proceeds earned were donated to the Niagara Police Athletic League.

On Wednesday evening, weather conditions were how they've been for majority of the spring - bitter cold and windy. Despite real feel temperatures in the low 30's, the Grand Island Vikings baseball team defeated the Niagara Falls Wolverines, 3-1.

In 2017, the Niagara Falls High School baseball team had a consistent lineup with names all of Western New York knew about. After running 10 to 11 guys out on the field consistently last season, coach Rob Augustino said 2018 would be completely different.
N-W boys lacrosse vying for gold in 2018

Since 2011, the Niagara-Wheatfield boys lacrosse team has faced off versus Hamburg in every Section VI Class B finals. The Falcons have one title win versus the Bulldogs in that time frame. In 2018, coach Vince Schiffert said his team is ready to get back on top.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons hockey team has been through it all this season. Coming off the previous season where they didn't make the sectional final; a middle of the season where they weren't playing their best hockey; a historic end of the season run; and the tragic loss of a classmate mixed into four months was just tidbits of what the Falcons went through. After the tragedy in the community, the team uplifted many Wheatfield spirits with a run to the New York state large schools championship. Unfortunately, good things come to an end, and on Sunday evening, the Falcons were defeated by the No. 1 team in New York state, the Victor Blue Devils, 5-1.

It's been a very tough week for the Niagara-Wheatfield community. On Wednesday, students, faculty, friends and family received tragic news that Michael Ziegler; a student at Niagara-Wheatfield High School and a member of the Falcons football, wrestling and lacrosse teams, tragically passed away.

The Niagara Falls High School basketball program has a rich history of winning and is always held to high expectations. In the 2017-18 season, they won the Niagara Frontier League and their 20th Section VI title dating back to the old Niagara Falls High School on Pine Avenue, but this year seniors Quran Dubois, Syquan Ralands, Tazaun Rose and Marquise Miller want more than just another sectional title: they want the states.

On Monday when the Niagara-Wheatfield Hockey team defeated Williamsville North for the Section VI large schools crown, Nick Peters played a rare game where he didn't record a point. Saturday night in the state quarterfinals, Peters was in on every scoring play. The Falcons defeated the Syracuse Cougars, 3-1, to move on to the state semifinals

It's been four days shy of three years since the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons hockey team raised their last Section VI championship. On Monday evening, the Falcons got back to the top, as they defeated unbeaten Williamsville North, 2-0, in the Section VI large schools title game.

On Feb. 29, 2016, coach Rick Wrazin and his Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons hockey team were defeated in the sectional finals, 1-0, versus Williamsville North. Wednesday night, the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks faced the Grand Island Vikings in the Niagara Frontier League's third place crossover game. The Lumberjacks got off to a hot start, but the Vikings continued to push their way back, falling just short. North Tonawanda defeated Grand Island, 59-53, in front of a loud Vikings crowd.

Niagara-Wheatfield coach Erik O'Bryan will admit, his team has been close in almost every game, but a big run by the opposing team seems to always haunt the Falcons at the end. That's exactly what happened Monday night, as the Falcons dropped a non-league contest versus Maryvale, 65-49.

Grand Island coach Ron Krysztof will tell anyone his team's ability to shoot the 3-pointer is critical. Wednesday night versus Niagara-Wheatfield, they only made six, a little below their season average, but all six came at key times to spark a Vikings win. The Vikings defeated the Falcons 51-30 Wednesday night for their second win in a row.
HS Hoops: Battle of the Border games come down to wire

For the third year in a row, the Battle of the Border brought talent from north of the border in Ontario to Niagara Falls High School to face off against some of the best that Western New York has to offer. Although only three Canadian teams played in this year's classic, the players from Canada represented their side of the border well, winning two of the three games. There were also some familiar faces from last year's battle who returned to the Wolvarena for another bought with an American high school. Here is a full recap from the action on Saturday.

Friday night's North Tonawanda-Niagara Falls matchup was a game that many people attending will never forget. Both teams provided non-stop, on the edge of your seat action that was thrilling until the final horn sounded. Like every basketball game, their must be a winner and the Wolverines were the victors, 58-55 in overtime.

Niagara-Wheatfield and St. Joes played the most hyped up hockey game scheduled for Wednesday night, as the No. 6 ranked team in the state faced the No. 9 ranked team in the state, respectively. After 50 minutes of play, though, there was no winner and no loser. The Falcons and Marauders tied, 1-1, Wednesday night at the Hockey Outlet. N-W and St. Joes came in as the second and third place teams in Division, respectively.

In basketball they say you live and die by the 3-pointer. Niagara-Wheatfield's girls basketball team didn't necessarily live or die by it Monday night versus Kenmore East, but when they made them, they were in big spots. The Falcons defeated the Kenmore East Bulldogs, 60-50, Monday night at Niagara-Wheatfield. It was the first time the two teams met all season.

It's rare for an eighth-grader to play on a varsity team, let alone start. The Niagara Falls Wolverines are in rare company, as they start two eighth-graders. Saturday afternoon at Aquinas, eighth-grader Willie Lightfoot was a key in sealing the Wolverines victory. The Falls defeated the Lil' Irish in their third road game in as many days, 68-55.

Niagara-Wheatfield head coach Rick Wrazin knows when his team is at its best. On Saturday night versus Lancaster, he saw some good things, but said his team was outplayed. Regardless, the Falcons won their third straight division game over the Legends, 2-0.
Niagara-Wheatfield golf to represent NFL in first Section VI team championship

On Thursday, Section VI boys golf Chairman Nate Leary announced that the section would hold its first annual Section VI boys golf team championship. The team aspect will be held alongside the annual individual championship and state qualifier. So, the tournament will not only crown an individual Section VI Champion and eight state tournament qualifiers, but also a Section VI team champion, something that hasn't been awarded in "many decades."
Niagara-Wheatfield basketball team to host 'Pink-out' night

As a teacher and a coach at Niagara-Wheatfield, coach Steve Miller has a lot that he has to take care of. Miller also has a family, which he cares for dearly. This summer, though, he was dealt a tough blow. Miller's wife, Krista, was diagnosed with breast cancer this past summer for the second time and he's been at the forefront taking care of his family. Along with that, he continues to help coach the Niagara-Wheatfield boys basketball team, which his son Cam Miller also plays for. The team has been nothing but supportive for the family, knowing what their coach and teammate is going through.
HS Hockey: Third period mishaps doom Falcons

In any type of sport, when you play the best, mistakes just can't happen. For 30 minutes, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons played mostly good, mistake-free hockey. But, it was the final 15 minutes the doomed them in the end. The Falcons took a tough loss to the hands of the reigning New York state champs, Williamsville North, 3-2, at the Northtown Center.

Being a high school student athlete is no easy task. Jumbling practice with homework, and games with important projects can be a difficult time for most. For Kelsey Lachowski, she's dealing with a lot more than being a senior in the classroom and on the court for the Niagara-Wheatfield girls basketball team.

Niagara Falls High School has been a thorn in the side of Niagara Frontier League basketball teams for years. Tuesday night, the Wolverines proved to the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons that trend is still alive, defeating the Falcons, 76-22.

In the second and final day of the 2017 Cataract Classic, the schedule provided a slate of six games that provided everything from close overtime games to teams showing their strength in victory. Games started at noon and the final horn sounded around 10 p.m. To catch up on the day and night's action, here is a recap of the final day of the 18th Cataract Classic.
