The Niagara University ESports team consists of six different teams: Four teams consisting of FIFA, Super Smash Bros, Ultimate Rocket League and Overwatch all compete at the Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF) and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC); the other two teams also play competitively with League of Legends and Valorant.

Is it a secret college is hard? No. Add some Zoom classes and hybrid classes to the mix, the inability to see friends and go out to let loose on the weekends after a tough week full of assignments, papers and exams, not being able to play sports with teammates, not being able to meet new people as a freshman because they are couped up in their dorms - that makes college even harder.

A team of University at Buffalo researchers have published a paper in Nature Communications that is helping to define the best time to give a specific treatment to infants born with Krabbe disease (KD). This treatment has been found to prolong life for these infants, for as long as a few years.

The January 2021 administration of the High School Regents Examination Program is canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Interim State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced Thursday. This cancellation applies to all Regents Examinations that had been scheduled for the January 2021 Regents Examination period. No decisions have been made regarding the June and August 2021 administrations of Regents Examinations or any of the other state assessment programs.

Mondays are normally a day of virtual learning for all students in the hybrid model. With the Veterans Day holiday on Wednesday, there will be no virtual day this week. Hybrid students in the green group will be on campus on Monday and Tuesday, while students in the white group will be on campus Thursday and Friday. The district will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

New York's new rear seat belt law goes into effect Sunday, Nov. 1, requiring all passengers to wear a seat belt in the back seat of a motor vehicle, including passengers of ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft. Until now, passengers over age 16 were not required to wear seat belts in the rear seat in New York. The new law, championed by AAA New York State, will save lives and prevent injuries across state roadways by requiring all occupants in a motor vehicle to buckle up.

For the second consecutive year, RG&E and AAA New York State are partnering together during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month to remind passenger and commercial drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. The companies urge drivers to take charge of eliminating distractions by focusing on the road ahead as visual and mental attention is key to safe driving.

More recently, ECDOH received reports from concerned parents and school districts about independent youth sports teams scheduling or participating in out-of-state games, tournaments, scrimmages and other activities.

Meet "Josh Allen," the Wheatfield Pumpkin Farm's 2,000-pound steer. Farmer Jim DeVantier, who has owned and operated the farm for over 30 years, affectionately named him after Josh Allen, quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. The steer is the star of the daytime hayride at the farm, which runs daily from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Recently, Niagara Wheatfield High School celebrated the completion of its new multipurpose athletic field. The project, which was estimated to cost $7.6 million, included an all-new synthetic turf field and is able to accommodate football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and field hockey. The project also included new bleachers (able to seat 2,000 home and 500 away fans), scoreboards, lights, fencing and backstops.

Niagara University has established a scholarship to assist BIPOC (Black or Indigenous person of color) students in their academic pursuits. The Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom Retention Scholarship, suggested by junior Lovell Lee and announced during a ceremony on Tuesday, will financially support students of color as they complete their degrees and establish and pursue their career goals.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday signed legislation (S.4336/A.6163) requiring all passengers in motor vehicles over the age of 16 to wear a seat belt. Currently, passengers aged 16 and older are only required to wear a seat belt in the front passenger seat next to the driver.

Lewiston-Porter has submitted its reopening plan to the New York State Education Department (NYSED). The reopening plan provides for in-person instruction, remote learning, and a hybrid of the two approaches as required by NYSED. Superintendent Paul Casseri shared our reopening plan with the school community this week.
